Well I have all 3 of them and it depends on what you are looking for.
Number of players: CS:S>>>BF2>>>>>>>>>>UT 3
These factors are subjective :P
Fun: UT 3>>BF2>>>>>>>>>>>>......>>>CS:S
Mods that are released and mods that will come (quality and ideas): UT 3>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>BF 2>>CS:S
Tactics: BF 2>>>>>>CS:S (beacuse unlike UT 3 where you need to move all the time, in CS people have time to camp :))>UT 3
Maps size/players: BF 2>>>UT 3 (though not all the maps are larger than CS maps)>CS: S
I would choose UT 3 but the online community isn't that big and it would be mostly for mods, so if you want lots of players get BF 2, I will never recommend CS:S because I don't like it at all, all I got it for were some mods, GMOD 10 and because of my cousin.
UT3 has incredible mod potential, with some ludicrous fan made maps coming out (like 2 castles facing each other, with just a tight walk bridge linking them). However its player base has shrunk considerably lately, servers may be on the short side.
CSS, this is a competitive game first and foremost. Playing this game with the intention of having fun on your own is like saying you play WoW purely for the solo aspect. Because in reality, the crux and meat of the game is in group play, with strategies and tactics. This is an incredible and hugely rewarding game if you find a good clan and the time.
BF2, THE best recreational online shooter out there. Forget about clans here, going solo is just as fun in fact. Being a lone sniper taking apart enemies across half the map is so fun its immeasurable! Map and server sizes here are gynormous, and there are some great mods for it too.
Overall, get CoD4. I don't know if you've played it yet but CoD 4 is pretty much all these games in one. Fabulous fun alone, and great with a team, this game can keep you awake for hours into the night....but if you've exhausted that already then it's a BF2 vote from me.
Day of Defeat!machine_BThis! Well if you buy CS:S at the store, most likely you're buying the bundle that comes with HL2: DM, DoD:S, and CS:S for $20. All three are awesome too, so my vote goes for CS:S
Depends on what kinda game you like... I personally own BF2 and UT3, but I played CSS alot last spring, borrowed an account.
Skill required: UT3 > BF2 > CSS
Map size: BF2 > UT3 > CSS
Community Size: CSS > BF2 > UT3
Custom content: UT3 = CSS > BF2
Graphics: UT3 > CSS > BF2
Fun: UT3 = BF2 > CSS
Unlockable stuff/Achievable stuff: BF2 > UT3 = CSS
Fun with group: BF2 > UT3 = CSS
Fun alone: UT3 > CSS > BF2 (if you like sniping, it's definately BF2 if you become skilled.)
Lagging/Glitches/bugs(least of them): CSS = UT3 > BF2
Overrall I'd say go with Ut3 or Bf2. Why not pick up both, they're not that expensive anymore. If you're an experianced FPS player, go with UT3, if you're a newcomer, go with Bf2. Not saying it's easy, but there are a lot more noobs in that game. Ut3 will seriously be a bloodbath for the first few times you play. Bf2 has unlockable weapons and ranks and medals, so you can "achieve" something in that game, which you cannot do in UT3.
Anyway, Gl choosing tha game, hope you have fun with any of the game you end up with. Other games worth checking out would be TF2 and COD4.
