School doesnt start for another week or so, this summer has absolutely sucked in terms of games and I have played most if not all major releases that have interested me at this point in the last couple years. I'm a fan of the Unreal series, but I never picked up Unreal Tornament 3, I'm guessing because its a sequel to a old franchise that the fans must think its inferior in some way. So how is it compared to 2004 or 2003, and how alive/dead is the community at this point? I'm itching for something new to play, and I saw that it has steam achievements which is always nice. It's 20 dollars on Steam.

It's a waste of space. The online portion was dead within a month or two of release. 2004 is far better in almost every way

It's not as good as UT2004 (but it's still decent) and the community was completely dead less than a year after release.

Not worth it.

I have fun playing warfare (the only gametype that has any worth) every now and then. But thats all it is to me, just something to kill a hour every now and then. I love UT and UT 2004 so I'm probably kinder towards it than many other people, its a 7/10 game imo. Main problems are the driving model is rubbish, seriously worst vehicle handling in a modern game. Lack of decent weapons, the minigun is good, the shock rifle is good in certain situations...but the rest of the weapons are pony. The map design in warfare is pretty good and theres a good variety of themed locations, the servers I play on play a variety of maps but a certain number are never played as they are seen as inferior. This is generally well judged and the maps that never get played are pretty pony. If you're a fan of UT tbh you should own it, also btw if you want it for your steam account the game is steamworks so the serial key can be activated on steam no matter where/how you buy it. So grab a cheap retail copy.

No words can describe how much more content it has. The bots are better, there's far more game modes, way more maps, much more map variety (from small indoor arenas to space battles to tank battles in open fields)

It was a buggy peice of garbage on release, they didn't really fix it until it was irrelevant.

UT3 is a great game. I was an avid fan of the original UT99, and I like UT3 better than 2003 or 2004. It's well worth $20, even today.

No, it's terrible. Just get 2004, it's massively better than 3 in every area you can imagine. UT3 really just felt like an afterthought.

Exactly what I was going to say when I entered this thread. I own both and just recently installed UT 2004 again, UT III I haven't touched since I finished the "campaign" for the very first time and this was in 2007, 5 years ago.

It was an absolute huge and massive letdown that you even HAD to be connected to the Internet to be able to SAVE your SINGLE PLAYER campaign >_>

Besides from that, graphics were nice, but that was all the game had to offer. From todays point of view even those wont hold up anymore I'd say.

This is so true. I bought UT3 on release and I didn't play more than 1-2 weeks. I continued playing UT2004 after that.

I liked it. First I bought it in PS3 due at the time was the only shooter that supported keyboard & mouse in the console, and spent near 100 hours in, having great fun despite the campaign is bad and game modes were worse than in UT2004. Still, the movement changes and the weapon balance was superb.

Then I bought it in the special edition for PC, but didn't play it a lot due I didn't want to play the campaign again, the multiplayer wasn't very popular and most of matches were a "you own/you get totally crushed". Is a good game but almost exactly the same formual as before, and most of current fps players want weapons to unlock, attachments to unlock, a rank progression, etc. and UTIII lacked any of those elements.

I don't think about UTIII as a bad game, but is a relic from the past, and now that Epic became irrelevant in PC gaming I think that ther's no longer a room for that kind of game in PC.

It's a very good game. It's dead though. I liked it better than 2k4 during the week of the Titan patch when people were actually playing it.
