Hello every one I have long browsed this awesome website; surely it's a haven for gamers of all ages.

I have recently bought the action / RPG game ''Mass Effect'' for PCs yet I am having many difficulties with it. The game is highly unstable on my machine. Every 5 minutes it crashes or before long cut sense.

Does any one have any advice? I don't think it's my computer it surpasses the system requirements for that particular game.

Is there a program or an update I need to download / install to stabilize the game?

Note: I didn't update the game or download any patches, since its not a MMO I don't think I need to.

Thanks in advance for your feed back.

Whenever a new patch comes out its always best to update your game. Many times a patch is released to correct stability issues like the one you are having. With so many variations in personal computer specs, a GOOD publisher will pay attention to their customers and work at correcting bugs and other problems post-release. I recommend patching your game to the latest version and then seeing how it runs. If this doesnt fix the problem then start adjusting your games video settings. Anti-alaising, dynamic lighting, shadows, geometry, can all drain your systems resources if they are set too high and cause a crash. Just because your systems meets or exceeds the game requirements doesn't mean it will run smoothly without some adjustment. Good luck and feel free to keep us updated.

First of all skullcandy said everything right. You must patch a game no matter what type especially if you are having stability problems. Secondly the minimum specs are often set too low. Publishers do this on purpose to increase their sales base. Meeting the minimum spec is often not enough to guarantee a game will run without some tweaking. Pay particular attention to what graphic cards are supported. People often overlook this part and its the most important.

mass effect does tend to have a few issues, especially with Nvidia cards, i experienced similar problems with crashing,

i found few posts on several forums saying that rolling back the graphics driver to july 2007 release it works. I did so and it did help

so maybe just give that a try

Well I have downloaded the one patch an another 300 MB which is supposed to be for extra content. I decreased my video settings, I hope I see some results it's been a while since I enjoyed an RPG with a good game play and a decent story line. Ah man I give any thing to go back to the good old days the days of Boulder's gate 2! Thank you very much for your support guys I will keep you updated! Let's hope the game works Note; my video card might be bit old it's a 9600 G-force 1024 MB, do I need to upgrade it for this game?

no that card should be fine but of course you would get better performance from something a little higher up the scale.

I reinstalled the game, applied the patch and decreased my video settings. But still the bug crashes the game on me .

And I can't run the game again until I restart my machine!

It says some thing like this; Generation protection fault (file not found)

Please if any one has any insight on this matter, help me out I really want to enjoy this game. Thank you very much for your support.

i had the crash after cut scene in the witcher it was gone with a format.. i think that it will be a good id say its a good idea to remove your video drivers and install new ones.. but if a protection issue like you said then go to bioware forum... this game got a whole load of crap thanks to its protection methods and bioware cant help at most times i recommend to post that in bioware help forum...

Actually, a lot of people on the Mass Effect boards have complained about problems appearing after patching the game and adding the bonus content. It seems that either the patch or the DLC introduces some problems, especially with Nvidia cards. One solution that has worked for some people is to roll back your video drivers to release 169.24, that's been reported to work in some cases. Apparently, there is some kind of conflict with the newer Nvidia drivers, Bioware may have goofed. Another solution is to uninstall the game, then reinstall it, but don't patch it or add the DLC. It's seems kind of counter intuitive to not patch the game, but in this case the patch caused more problems than it solved. I, for one, never saw a single problem until I patched the game. After applying the patch, it crashed within 15 minutes every time.

The good news is that supposedly BioEA is making a new patch that should be released "soon" for all versions of the game. There are no details on the patch yet, but rumor has it that the patch will include an activation revoke tool (not enough to fix the criminal DRM, but maybe a start) and will hopefull correct the most major crash bugs. It's been a long time coming, and there's no excuse for that, but hopefully it'll correct the problems. I'm not holding my breath, though.

Yeah I had this "general protection error" that caused the game to crash every now and then, a lot of people on the official boards seemed to have it too. Patching helped a bit, but it never fully went away...

Great game btw!

That game is just not worth buying for the PC.... Patch? The game has no real patch. The only patch that game had, was to allow their added 10 minute scenero of Bring Down the Sky, did nothing about the any actual crashes. The only solution for the general protection fault is to use older video drivers.... with the 169.21 being the most stable for WinXP, and an old enough video card that will go back that far. But even then still expect the game to crash between 10-60 minutes. The problem is that a 3rd party (Demiurge) ported the game from Console to PC and now EA doesn't want to take responsibity for it.
