Ill admit it now, i dont know a huge amount about computers. At th emoment i have norton anti virus o7/06 i think...

I have spoken to people who say there are better one's to buy, yet i have not been given any names? Also others say you can downlaod free one's, of which are legal and protect you better??

Firstly...help, can i get free ones which are just as good??

And secondly, do some anti's protect firewalls and virus's better, meaning do i need to download more than one?

thanks alot :)

It is never a good idea to have more than one anti-virus, they can hinder each others detection of virus'. But there are some good free ones such as AVG and the Trend Micro one, I forget its name. As for firewalls, there are also some free ones, but I've had problems with them so I just the built in windows firewall since my router and modem have built in firewalls to protect me as well.

AVG and Avast are the best free anti-virus's! Windows firewal is good enough.

AVG is good for antivirus, so is Avast. Pick one. For a firewall, the free version of ZoneAlarm is pretty good. Spyware can be handled using AdAware, Spybot Search & Destroy, CWShredder and SpywareBlaster. HiJackThis is also good, but not for beginners. All are free. :)

I personally use AVG Anti-Virus Free for virus detection.

For a firewall I use Zone Alarm Free. I disagree that the Windows Firewall is enough.

For spyware I have used a mix of Ad-Aware, Spybot Search and Destroy, and Windows Defender.

While the advisory to only use one anti-virus app holds true, the opposite is true of Anit-Spyware, where you should always run two. This is because their definition files will be different, as well as their search heuristics and quarantine algorithms. Using two applications provides at least a chance that if one app misses something, it will be picked up by the other.

ZoneAlarm is one of the best free firewalls, and as for windows firewall i don't trust it at all.

For antivirus i use : AVG Free and Antivir, both are good and free but u'll need a decent pc to run both at the same time without a performace loss.

Norton is a bit of a system hog and no you don't necessarily get 'better' protection buy paying for your anti-virus software.

I've used AVG in the past, to use the free one you'll need to install their A/V scanner and their Spyware software as the one package that has them both is only good for 30 days. As far as spyware goes you can run more then one at once, Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware are also very good.

I just picked up Kaspersky because it came with a 3 computer licence, is the highest rated and also does spyware & has a built in firewall. The price was pretty good too, $5.00 after a $70 rebate.

One last thing, switch to Firefox if you haven't over Internet Explorer as it tends to cut down on the maleware you'll get on your computer.

Just read the onscreen instructions carefully during the install. The AVG Antivirus is free, I use it. No need to install it every month. I'm pretty sure there is an "opt out" option for their Antispyware shareware app. Like an option (button) that says "no thanks, just install the free antivirus", or something. Same goes for ZoneAlarm's free firewall. Don't install the complete suite, just the firewall, otherwise it's shareware and not free.

I'm saying yes. Lose the Norton. Go with the free ones. Save your system resources and your money. :)

Hardware is the best protection out there. A decent router with an SPI firewall blows every single software anti virus out of the water. I've never had a virus or any type of protection problems since I bought a router.

Although I do use kaspersky for the security scan and spyware protection.
