Hi guys in my laptop I have a Nvidia GeForce 8400M GS. I was wondering if I can download anytihng which will update it and make it better? I just found a download called GeForce Release 175, I was wondering what that will do? The details of it are here:

http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/winxp_175.19_whql_uk.html

You may remember that I want to run Rome Total War on it ;) Thanks again for all your help.

Drivers are meant to fix bugs and stability, sometimes they give performance boost.
But anyway, you will be fine with the 8400m playing that game. :)

On the details it says "Improved 3D performance and load times for GeForce 8 and 9 series GPUs in some DirectX 9 and OpenGL applications as a result an improved shader optimizer", so what does that mean then? Also, the reason I was looking was because many people have said that card won't be good enough -_-

That is a performance boost for a few applications, but as always they are small.

It would be true if it was a current game (2006-08 ) but its a 2004 game so you will be fine. :)

Drivers give small performance boost compared to the previous one.

But if you have never upgraded your graphic drivers then you surely will gain some performance!

Wait! First uninstall your current drivers! You can do that in Device manager > Display adapter > GF 8400 > Driver uninstall. Have fun with Rome, it's a great game.

I haven't actually got the laptop yet anyway, it should arrive next week. Why do you need to uninstall the current driver first? Is it crucial that you do it?

Usually U don't need to uninstall it, but in some case/rare case you'll find a blue screen saying that "nv4 driver failed..." or something like that... I get that problem with my 8600gt...

So I could try it without uninstalling and it wouldn't matter if I got an error message I could just then do it the other way.

Do note that with laptop video cards, you can not get drivers from the Nvidia (or ATi) website as you would for desktop GPUs. You must use ones made specifically for your laptop and they will only be available at your laptop manufacturer's website, if they bothered making any. You might also find them occassionally at other hosts, however you must be sure that they are spefically for your make and model.

Nevertheless, no drivers or other tweaks are going to do much about the abyssmal performance the 8400M GS is going to give you. You should really just cancel your laptop order and get one with a 8600+/9500+.
