I have a 50 inchPanasonic Panny. I have really enjoyed it. I also own a 42 inch Plasma, I love the technology. You will get a little image retention (IR), but it is no big deal, and should not be confused with "Burn in". LCD is terrible for movies, unless you get one with the LED backlight. But, LCD is good for TV and Video games.

I second the Panasonic Plasma line. Cant pick a bad one. Just choose whichever one fits your budget.

Panny or Pioneer blacks are the best.

I gotta agree with most of these guys, I just bought a Panasonic TH50PZ85U plasma and love it. Its been reviewed as having some of the best blacks around. I've been playing a lot of Skate 2 on it and watching a lot of basketball, and so far no image retention. I got it for $1500 USD, Im not sure what that translates into Australian.

I found a really decent online retailer that has a nice selection of Plasma TVs while not necessarily applicable because you are in australia, at least you can use as a basis for comparison. http://www.homeappliancegallery.com/plasma-televisions.aspx They have a really good deal on the Panny 50" 720P TV for like 850 bucks.

Just my $0.02.

You want deep blacks? Go Plasma. Want a solid Tv? GO LCD. LCDs have been getting a bad rap about blacks. But if you know about manual configuration, you can turn the LCDS into a fantastic set. Besides, my room is brightly lit during the day, so LCDS have an advantage because there is no glare.

LCD is terrible for movies?? Plasmas are horrid for video games, especially with dark themed games like resident evil.

LCD pros- Angles. You can view it from anywhere in the room. Deep blacks, Motion blurs have been fixed in recent models, environment friendly, less power/energy, much more life. Less heavy. No noise.

LCD cons- screen is quite difficult to clean.

Plasma Pros-deep blacks, glossy look makes for smooth playback, good for everything except gaming.

Plasma cons- noisy, heavy, power eater, angles suck unless you sit almost infront of it, glare even on the anti glare. Games look too dark

Sharp aquos, samsungs and bravias are fantastic.Frankly, i dont give a damn.

OK have to disagree you made such a huge mistake, viewing angles on LCD's are terrible compared to plasma I can stand side on to my plasma's and the picture doesn't fade or anything but my LCD changes contrast and colours depending where you are sitting its only bang on if you sit right in front of it.

I have two Panny plasma TV's and they make no noise what so ever yeah maybe if you buy cheap or old but the fan on my samsung LCD makes more noise but even then once I have content playing on it I cant here any fan at all.

one thing that gets my goat is when people say LCD is getting better all the time well guese what so is plasma.

OH but I do agree about power consumption plasma's are horrific

There's so much misinformation here, I don't know where to start.

let the lcd vs plasma debate go on!

yes, plasma panels tend to have better PQ. nothing compares to panny and pioneer contrast. and yes, lcd's are better for pc and video games. overall, though, the new generation of tv's have become soooo goood. new samsung lcd's compare well with new panny plasma. for plasma, IR and bur-in are almost history. you almost cant go wrong with your purchase!

personally i'd say lcd is better than plasma but no matter what route anyone goes there is advantages and disadvantages to different types. i prefer a lcd hdtv with a mesh screen, it's great when it comes to avoiding glare from lights in the room, the glass screens can have a nicer look but get too much glare too easily, depending on how bright the lights are in the room, some people prefer the dark for watching stuff, some prefer the lights on. i use a hdtv lcd for a pc monitor and it's great, but who could complain about a 32in monitor? lol i do have a 42in plasma in a different room but i think the lcd is better overall, plus the plasma has the glass screen, but i got a great deal on it like new so i wasn't complaning. but yea most are going to be good today, but i'd say avoid the glass screens unless you want to risk dealing with glare of lights in the room.
