Just built my rig a couple of months ago, so I still have 30 days or so on my EVGA step-up. I'm just not sure if the 9800 is worth the extra $250 to upgrade to. I can't run SLI since I have an x38 mobo, so adding another 8800 is out of the question until someone makes a hack. Think I should wait for the hack (if there ever is one) and get another 8800, or should I suck it up and get the 9800, which really isn't that much better than what I got.

The gx2 is about the same, more or less, as an SLI config of g92 gts cards.

Haha what a pathetic joke.

Anyways TC the GX2 is certainly worth $250 over the GTS.

I can finally agree with you. If you have only 1 pci-e slot then the 9800gx2 is woth it. I say this because its truely ment for non sli mobos though it has a sli connector.

Get the GX2. I have a similar set up (x38 motherboard) and the move from a G80 8800GTX to the 9800GX2 was very noticeable.

I'm not really trying to beat crysis, just trying to increase the longevity of my system and not break the bank. I love the 8800 gts 512, but for $250 more, I could get alot more card. Also, how stable is your 9800 at your OC speed mikeblunt2020 and what are the temps?

It seems stable at my current overclock (although I'll admit I've been tweaking it all weekend, but I think I've got the whole system at it's sweet spot). Idle temp is about 43-45c. I'll keep an eye on it while gaming and see what it reaches and report back.

Right now I use my TV as a monitor so it's at 1360x768. I'm planning on getting a nice monitor withing the next 6 months, so I will probably be running at pretty high resolution (can't say for sure on what though).

Having a GX2 will not restrict your choices of monitors as much as the GTS.

I just think it's worth a step up for $250 as you dont get the chance to step up again to may as well get the best and make it last a long time.

Well I´m sorry but there will never be some sort of "hack", the Crossfire do not work in the same way as the SLI does, there is just not fysical possible with the chipset to do both CF and SLI, their way of handling multi GPU do not work the same way.

So, back to the question, Yes the gx2 is your best shoot on a single PCIe for now.

Considering there is a hack for the 7800 series to work in SLI on Intel chipsets, it's not impossible. Last year there were some demo x38 mobo's running SLI. The only thing preventing Intel from allowing this commercially is that Nvidia is their competition with chipsets, and Nvidia wants you to have to buy their usually inferior mobo's. All it takes is hacked nvidia drivers...

Probably not. Even if there was one, it would probably be unstable... Guess I'm still better off with an x38 than with another crappy nforce board that has the option of SLI.

This is not entirely true, cos the way a CF board and SLI board is using for transfer data is NOT even the same way.

Sure you possible could get around (the way SLI use accses of hardware and implement Multi GPU) this by code your own drivers and make a new bios for your x38.

"but".. Is there anyone buying a CF board for intending to make use of Nvidia´s GPU´s? -No

There is no future for x38 boards and nvidia.

Quick question. I play on a 20in Samsung lcd, 1680x1050 res.

Would a 8800GTS G92 be overkill? I was just going to get a 8800GT but with the 9800gx2 out the GTS prices are more in my range now.

Nope, the GTS would be a great fit for that rez. I use that rez also, and I'm thinking about getting that card soon too.

I would have to disagree with everyone. You should just save your money, if there is something your card can't handle in the future, the 9800GX2 won't be able to either.
