I got your CPU, your machine is better than mine :( I ordered new parts so tomorrow i'll have a i5 quad and 4gb ram, 5770 GPU... Nothing fancy just a decent upgrade... The only real thing you could upgrade is the GPU like you said, your CPU is pretty solid still...

As for the upgrade, yes you should see a pretty good difference but by "lag" if it's your internet causing it then no amount of GPU's and CPU's in the world can help that... But yes if it's graphics it should reduce the lag, especially at full HD quality.

You should also note, you need a new PSU, even a top-end 230watt PSU won't be able to take a GTX460.

If you want a 460, then you will need to get a new power supply as well. If you get that then you will be set for a while. You can get a Core 2 Quad for your system as well if you want

+1 Get a new PSU along with your GTX460, TP, and either OC your CPU or upgrade to a core 2 quad.

You should be fine with your C2D for now, but it might be a good path for the future. As for performance increase, you would notice a MASSIVE difference. You will be able to max any game, max resolution no problem.
