I just got Turtle Beach Earforce x11. Is it worth upgrading to the surround sound version (DX11). Is there that big a difference in the sound quality between the two?

Yes its worth upgrading to better headphones but not Turtlebeach. You should try Sennheiser, Denon, AKG. They make proper quality headphones.

No, the surround sound headset is just a stereo headset with Dolby Headphone digital processing to simulate 7.1

These guys are exactly right. Grab a stereo headphone and a sound card designed for headphones and you will experience better sound quality.
