Upgrades and what you do with your old parts

Obviously, when you build a system, you build it knowing you will upgrade your hardware here and there. I've always been lucky enough to sell my old video cards/processors and such, so I don't just have stuff lying around. But it doesn't look like anyone is in the market for the card and processor I have now.

So what do you guys do when you upgrade? Just sit on your old parts? Try to sell it? Save them up and build another computer when you have enough of them? Throw them away?

Spares, new computers. I only really need powerful computers for my main server and desktop, the reset can be pentium 3s. However, I'm at the point where I am having too many spare pcs lol, 2-3+ extra. I would use them as a cluster, except I have nothing to do with a cluster, and they aren't very powerful.

Things I do with spare pcs: Apache web server

Pfsense freebsd router.

Mysql server

Print server(not anymore, I only buy ethernet printers :))

Gateways(like untangle)

Though I do most of these in virtual machines on my main server now.

That was quite the interesting interaction between TheMagicBum and UltimateGamer! Is there a spot in the Gamespot forums, or anywhere really, where people just give away their stuff or trade/sell or something? That could be quite interesting....

And if anybody has an old GTX 260/HD 4870 and X4 940 they would love to give me because they don't know what to do with it..... :P

i sell them or if i know they wont sell but are still useful parts i set em aside either for charity ( i know a guy who takes old parts and builds pc's for the underpriveledged), or for my brothers legacy rig.

currently im debating wether or not i should give him my old core 2 duo(e7400) any meybe my old keyboard n mouse (logitech x100 series)

eeeww...don't do that. I've got some storage space only for extra PC parts. Never know when those things will come in handy!

I either sell them on craigslist or give them away. Right now I have a E2160, P35-DS3L, and a Freezer 7 Pro just sitting in my closet. Tried selling on craigslist but didn't get an offer. Who wants it?!?!musclesforcier

But I don't think Ultimategamer would like that, and random people who come here to play on it. So deal with Ultimate gamer :P

hmm I wonder...Does anyone have any video cards that they are willing to part with for free or for a small price? Let's see I'm interested in any cards from the ATI 2000, 3000, and 4000 series and anything in the geforce high 7 series, mid to high 8 series, and mid to high 9 series. So guys do you have any? :)

I sell some parts, and give others away. And I either sit on the rest, or throw them away. I try to keep a stock of legacy parts for when I fix computers. In fact, I just upgraded everything in someone's computer except the motherboard and case with spare parts. He's getting a better CPU, GPU, RAM, HDD, HSF's, etc...-GeordiLaForge-

I either sell them to help offset the cost of upgrading a part, or slowly accumulate each part for a spare PC. Usually the later now since most of the hardware (8800-295 series or radeon 4-5 series) will run games well for a long time to come, including things like quads/mobos.

Could you please keep the begging to a minimum: it's quite unpleasant to read. Many of us are in the same situation where we have to pay for tuition too so please don't use the "I'm a poor college student" excuse all the time.

Edit: oh back to topic, my first option is to use it to upgrade my dad's computer. second is to offer it to my friends for a ridiculously good offer so they get the first dibs. my third option is to sell it on forums/craiglist. Finally, I go to ebay.

This reminds me, anybody else find many craiglist responses to be ridiculous sometimes? Some people are so cheap in their offer these days that it actually makes me angry.
