Poll Upgrading from GTX 970M to GTX 1060 6GB, worth it? (16 votes)

Yes, get the GTX 1060 6GB with i7 7700HQ. 81%
No, 970M with i7 6700HQ is fine. 19%

So, I have a buyer for the ASUS ROG G752VT laptop with 970M 3GB and 6700HQ. I am seriously wanting to get the newer Pascal GPU with GTX 1060 6GB and along with it I would be getting the newer Kaby Lake processor. Question is it worth it?

As benchmark from below:

As one can see, I would be getting nearly 60% performance increase and double the VRAM. This should be make it future proof for couple of more years and now that newer games like Doom, Rise of the Tomb Raider and the newer Deus Ex all taking up more than 4GB I should be able to play newer AAA games maxed out which I can't now with this laptop due to it's less than 3.5GB frame buffer.

Note: This is the full blown this is the Desktop version of the GTX 1060 6GB meaning I will be getting the same number of cores and ROP's extra except it's slightly downclocked although, in the review above it states it's getting desktop level boost clock when gaming.

Only question is the cost worth it? I would be losing slightly less if I sell it.

Suggestions?

Yes, as long as you got a beefier desktop rig already as your primary rig. I have a 1060 in my secondary rig and it is pretty solid at 1080p, but I would not use it for 1440p and up.

I believe gtx 1070 8gb vram + i7 7700hq and 16gb ram with 120hz 1080p monitor is the ultimate future proof laptop for gaming.

This laptop I just mentioned will be young forever and run all games. If you want future proof this is the best in my opinion

Ordered it! Got the Alienware 17 R4 17.3 inch laptop with i7 7700 HQ and GTX 1060 6GB. Got 10% coupon off from Dell plus another $150 cash back for using a new credit card so, in total I got $300+ off the retail price of the originial Alienware 17 R4. So, in other words I got it cheaper than the other laptop models like the Asus ROG G752VT with the 1060 despite the fact that Alienware 17's are so expensive. Good deal in my opinion. Plus, as stated in the review it has the Alienware Graphics Amplifier so I could add an external Graphics Card via the Alienware Amplifier port on the laptop in the future. Can't do that with the Asus ROG or the other laptop makers.

Yeah I got a beefier desktop. But with the Kaby Lake and 1060 6GB it should make come close to the desktop. Although, I got my desktop 6700K overclocked to 4.5 Ghz so it should edge out the Kaby Lake 7700HQ since I don't plan to overclock the Kaby Lake.

Still, I finally can play AAA games at 1080P on the laptop maxed out. I have gotten used to playing on the laptop more and more for the newer games.

Alienware 17 R4 got good reviews.

With the Alienware 17 R4 you don't need to worry about future proofing that much like with previous generation of laptops because it has Alienware's proprietary Graphics Amplifier external Graphics Connector via their proprietary port, so I can upgrade to a 1080 Ti or a Volta GPU in the future.

Plus, it's already expensive as it is with the the GTX 1060 6GB and Kaby Lake.

If I get the 1070 now, by the time I am going to need it, I could probably pay the cost of the Amplifier and a new Volta GPU or 1080 Ti and at the same price as upgrading to a GTX 1070 now.

Got it!

All I can say that this thing is a Beast! I am getting desktop level performance. I got boost GPU Clock up to 1885+ Mhz on the core clock on my GTX 1060 6GB. It's insane. I hope it lasts long just like one of my 17" Gaming Laptop that had an AMD GPU that lasted over half a decade unlike my last nVidia Gaming Laptop that I had which barely lasted two years. I am giving nVidia another chance (see I am not a fanboy! ;)

Ever since they started using desktop GPU's gaming laptops are seriously viable options for gaming even as your main rig.

I remember seeing that 21:9 Laptop and drooling then having a heart attack after looking at the price tag.

Also this got to be one of the few cases where bumping your own month old thread is OK I guess.

Can we bump threads for future ownage of a user that goes by the name Ron?... His Ark Xbox One X talk is frustraiting as hell, he just won't accept that the game is poorly optimised and that the developer has a HIGH chance of not hitting there target of 1080p 60FPS, something a GTX 1080 Ti struggles to do.

I'm kidding, but also f*** ron

But.... but the dx12 command processor lowers latency and workload so much the ryzen cough cough.. O i mean improved jaguar cpu in the x1x is as fast as Ryzen 4c/8t cpu...... And the X1X gpu's extra memory bandwidth removes the gpu's processing bottlenecking allows the gpu to perform as fast as a GTX 1080 o I mean GTX 1070! O didn't I also state that the dual subword 16fp feature in the X1X "paxwell" does not have.....

I swear he squirts AMD presentations every time he logs in.....

Ark devs dont know how to optimize on PC and PS4 .... which means X1X's 1080p 60 fps with "near epic" settings target will be nonexistent....

Have you seen the digital foundry tests of the PS4Pro... I s*** you not 720p 30FPS, and the "detailed" option at 1080p drops to 20FPS all the time on settings that don't even resemble high.

IF there is one developer in the world I don't take seriously its Arc developers and in close is the Day Z guys, anyone who listens to word they say after all these years is nothing but a mug.

This is true. I plan to make this my primary Gaming device and using my old HTPC to play maybe older games that is hooked up to my 60" Plasma. I love having everything, work and gaming all in one Laptop.

Ha! I think more people should know about how great the GTX 10XX series is (cross my fingers) for Gaming on the Laptop.
