I am considering a signifigant upgrade. I currently have a WD 1TB 7200rpm HDD, with all my files and games and vista installed. I want to add a Velociraptor 300gb drive and upgrade to windows 7. Can I just install windows 7 on the new faster drive and then transfer some programs over from my old drive, and then useit as storage? or do i need to install windows 7 on both and completely reinstall everythingfor each drive?will that even work? what is the best way to go about this? thanks!

You will probably need to reinstall your games. Some may be able to be copied over, but don't expect it to be that easy. As for using the 1TB for storage, sounds like a good idea to me.

so as far as the basic installation goes... i just would wipe my old drive, install windows 7 on the new drive, and then slave the empty old drive to the new one? or how does that work having 2 drives and gettin a new OS?

OS drive would plug in to the first SATA port, the 1TB in to the second.

You could leave it on the other drive and dual boot, but in all honesty if it works on Vista it works on 7. Once you get a feel for 7 you wont be using Vista again. :)

hehe yea i figured. so i have to wipe my old drive clean, install the velociraptor, install win 7 on the new drive, then link the old one as a slave, and then begin installing programs? also, which programs should i put on the faster drive, and which should i put on the old one? games, music, and OS on the fast one? pictures, movies, documents on the old one? or what

Fast drive: Games you play frequently and demanding applications.

Old drive: Old applications and "lite-programs", such as Microsoft Office, Irfanview, Google Chrome, DVD player app, XXX vids8)etc...

Why not go for an SSD? Just curious, got a velociraptor in my rig when I built it last summer and have been kicking myself for not getting an SSD for OS.

You can leave everything on the old drive as is. The key is do not connect the old drive until after you have installed Windows on the new drive. I have had other 2 HDDs witha Windows installation on each of them in addition to a 3rd that was newest. You can even play games that are already on the other drive, Windows will create a registry (it should ask, at least it did when I did this) entry when you first play it. If you want, you can still wipe the drive after you get documents and patches and stuff copied over to the new drive. One thing, ensure you save your email files so you can replace them in your new install, especially if you use Windows Mail, and especially if you have emails you need that have important stuff in them like CD Keys and whatnot.

In my last computer, I had 3 hard drives with 600GB of space between the 3 of them.

I wanted to be able to put more than just win 7 on the new drive, so that (and the rediculous price) ruled out an SSD. 300gb should be enough for the OS and a fair amount of games. and yea i think i will just transfer and then wipe. is it easy to access the stuff on the old HDD once i have two?
