Yes you can upgrade, but you can't switch architectures.

I had a problem upgrading though. Using Vista Home Premium and it wouldn't upgrade to Windows 7 Pro, had to do the custom install. It was x64 to x64 so change there.

Your versions were different Home Premium/Professional, I don't think that works either.

Yeah I found that out real fast. Thought there were only 3 versions of 7 coming out, but it turns out there are 5 in total (Starter;home basic;home premium;pro;ultimate).

I just wanted to get that word out in case others made that mistake as well. I initially thought that there was only Home Basic, Pro, and Ultimate(as some websites only advertise those). So i thought hey Home Premium Vista may be like 7 Pro. I wish MS would stop releasing so many darn versions lol, it's confusing.

They should get rid of starter and ultimate. But when people are willing to pay double the price for dubious reasons just to have the "best" version, I guess that won't happen any time soon.

that is correct. unfortunately you'll need to do a clean install of 64 bit vista or win7. i recently went from vista 32 bit to 64 bit and had to reinstall all my programs. took me days. :) i recommend taking screenshots of your settings n stuff. makes it easier to get things back to how you had it.

Will Vista Business 64-bit upgrade to Windows 7 Professional 64-bit?

Because I have that right now and I just bought the student discounted W7 Professional for $30?

Yes. You're explicitly stating that you don't need anything from your PC, so this method sounds perfectly fine. Backing up data is very easy though, anyway - the only reason I can see for getting the "upgrade" variant of Win7 is simply to save a little bit of money. Don't forget the OEM-restrictions when using the upgrade method. Retail will allow you to change your motherboard.

I would've thought they could at least let you upgrade if the version is higher-end than the previous. Thats disappointing.

It's isn't really that big a loss when you consider it's always best to do a fresh install of an OS over simply installing over it.
