I have a Packerd Bell laptop 386 that has windows 3.1 on it. I bought this new in 1992 and it has been working fine, but I want to try using a different OS now. Anyhow...

I just got a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate and there are no floppy disks in the package. Its a cd. How do I install this?

Ummmm I'm pretty sure that it won't run at all, or even install. I just opened up our Packard Bell desktop from 94 to get files off of the hard drive since the CMOS battery died. The hard drive is only 1 Gig. I'm pretty sure a hard drive in a laptop from that era isn't even close to being big enough. Plus, just think of how bad the CPU is going to be, and I'd be surprised if it had more than 16 megs of RAM. If you really want to use a different OS, try a linux distro. Maybe Gentoo or Slackware would run on it?

EDIT: Weren't 16 bit processors being used back then anyways?

If you hold the CD in the light just right and spin it, you can see "1"'s and "0"'s in the disc. This is binary code, which your computer understands. Just shout out the numbers in sequence until your computer has the new operating system loaded. There's a lot of data though, and this could take a few hours. Be sure to have some water and go to the bathroom before you start.

Put the Vista DVD on top of the monitor overnight - the OS should drip into the computer and install itself. Its a feature of Ultimate.

:D

Guys, just give him a freaking answer. There is no floppy version. We are now in a CD/DVD era. As I said and someone linked to, your laptop can't even run it. There is no way to install Vista off of a floppy. You do need a new computer...

You never know with this kind of communication. But I'd rather not be a total dick just in case he was serious.

Wow, dude you need to make a call to dell, can that thing even get on the internet. Funny thing though, I gave a woman at church my old ibm with a p3-750 and 384 megs, she said it was really fast, so just out of curiousity i Looked at her old desktop which someone had built for her. It was a cyrix 486 slc, and I swear it took about ten minutes to get to the windows screen.

Yeah, even if you have really old hardware, chances are good that there is a linux distro that can run on it. I use a semi-minimalist distro called Zenwalk on an old PIII machine and it runs really well. I have heard of people running other distros on way older hardware, though.

There is even a distro called Damn Small Linux that I can boot and run from a 256 MB usb thumb drive (the OS, with apps and everything, is ~50 MB). There is even an option with DSL to load the entire OS into RAM (probably need 512 MB+ to work) and run it at ridiculous lightning-fast speeds.

Right. An April Fool in August. And a very bad one at that.
