I just reformatted my hard drive and now none of my USB ports seem to work. I checked the BIOS upon startup and made sure they were enabled. The CD that came with my motherboard won't let me install the drivers. When I select the USB drivers it gives me a Windows Notepad message saying I don't need them since Windows XP already has the drivers (my mobo is an Asus P5AD2-E Premium). I checked their website and can't find the solutions either. When I put in a thumb drive it doesn't read or install it. Same thing with my wireless mouse. I went into Device Mananger and uninstalled/reinstalled them and no help there either. Any ideas/suggestions? Have a great day!

Pardon the ignorance, but what are those and how do I do it? I installed Asus updater from the CD the mobo came with. I tried running it but it was really slow, is that what I need to try again?

no, that won't do much for you. Go to the asus website, look up your mobo and find the drivers for it. Got to install drivers or things wont work properly.

Ok, I've worked some more on the problem. I went to the Asus website and found the downloads for my mobo, but didn't see anything with the description of "chipset drivers". I did find that on the install disk that I have, but I had already installed those. I went to Intel's website and found drivers for my chipset, installed those, and nothing changed. Finally last night I reformatted/reinstalled Windows XP again and now I'm back where I started from. I also have gone into Device Manager and uninstalled the drivers for my USB ports, did a hardware change scan, and then reinstalled with no difference, still no use.

The weird thing is, and I don't understand this, is that I took one of my wireless mice (or is it mouse's when talking about computers? lol) and plugged in the USB dongle, and in one of the USB ports the LED on the dongle lit up and remained lit. But only in one of the ports, and Windows didn't load it. And I'm plugging everything into the ports attached directly to the mobo, not any on the front or top of the case.

So in review, am I looking for "chipset drivers" or BIOS drivers when I go to Asus' website? I even called them and the guy I talked to told me to do this and that but I couldn't find what he was talking about when I went back to my computer. I think I might try them again later today (if they're open) or tomorrow night maybe. Thanks for any help that's out there, have a great day!

Oh, and to add to my predicament, I'm being forced to use an oldddddd Dell two button mouse, no scroll wheel, and certainly not optical! Help me please!

couple of things

http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us

When you go there click "others", when that drops down download and attempt to install these:

Intel matrix storage manager

see what the Intel software installation utility is

and at the top of the list are chipset drivers, I realize they say 64bit so try them anyway. They may be mislabeled.

Also go into BIOS and make sure you have the USB support on for both 1.1 and 2.0, if you see something along the lines of "legacy usb support" then enable that.

Sometimes XP says that it has installed drivers for the USB ports but it's not what you need and thus they are unusable.

I tried all of that and still no go. One of the first things I did was check the BIOS to make sure USB was enabled, and it was. When I installed some of the files you mentioned above I could tell that some of the same things were being loaded again, i.e. network drivers and stuff. I keep wondering if it's something inside the computer itself but I'm using the ports built-in to the motherboard so I don't know what could be the problem there. It's just really frustrating loading software and then having to reinstall everything again. Unless you have some more ideas I guess I need to call Asus again tomorrow. I'm assuming they're closed on Sunday, but I might try anyways. Thank you!

Thanks for all the help! Finally called Asus and they said to return it under warranty. Now I just hope I can get it out of the case without hurting anything else and get the CPU out ok. Have a great day!
