Because it seems like these forums are only trying to spread misinformation without bothering to look up facts. And btw it only shows up when auto-saving, if you were to go into menu's and press save it appears as "system.

In fact if you were to read the thread here as posted previously in another thread it would show that Valve hasn't always given us the ability to change FOV i.e. CS:S so unless CS:S was a console port then I see no reason for this overexageration.

Honestly, it just seems like people are trying to pick holes into a serious GOTY contender.

That doesn't satisfy many people still. There are even people in that thread who are still nitpicking over it, that think that was simply an excuse to get people off of their case. People don't care that the game runs flawlessly on PC, and feels like a PC game instead of a console port. What they care about are little things, like not being able to change the FOV, even though the FOV is already fine. And the wording it has when saving. People don't care about the games themselves anymore.

Exactly. There's always something for people to nit pick about. And I don't think for as long as I'll live that I'll ever understand it.

Dictionary says... Console.... the control or monitoring unit of a computer, containing the keyboard or keys, switches, etc.

Gamers are just reallllly whiny sometimes. Here's what it sounds like to me;

"This PC game... Has the word console, on the saving screen!?

... This... THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE! We, the loyal PC gamers, have been betrayed by those sellouts at Valve!

My brothers! For too long have we had to deal with the word console on the saving screen! The rest of the game is simply unplayable as long as that damned saving screen has that putrid word smeared on it! Our money was wasted! I have never been so disgusted! This game is a joke!

Quickly, to the Metacritic user scores! This is a crime against humanity... Give this piece of CRAP a 0/10, my fellow PC gamers! We will not stand for such rubbish!"

Derp

Complaining about a insignificant little thing like that is in my opinion as ridiculously stupid that it makes those that were responsible for cups of coffee to have "Warning, Content may be hot" printed on them, look as smart as Stephen Hawkings and Einstein.

Yeah...

I dont understand how Valve could ever be called console sellouts seeing as their main source of income is from PC gaming.

CSS is a multiplayer game, Portal 2 is not. And I think in CSS you can if cheats are on, Portal 2 you can't at all.

It's easy for strings like this to get mixed up during development. On the console versions we can fail cert for not having a string warning the user not to shut off the console. We can also fail cert if the string says "Please don't turn your PC off...". So as such the strings get changed to be appropriate on the console (usually during the phase where we are heavily testing consoles and working to pass cert late in development). In this case it looks like a bug that the string was also changed on the PC version.

That really has no bearing on which platform is the "lead" platform, all of the platforms are important to us and it's certainly not true that the game was built for consoles and then ported to PC. Like most of our past titles PC in fact tends to be the most used platform internally during much of development, though consoles get plenty of love too since we want to ensure quality across the board.

Valve Rep

well said, Valve. Now, if the haters will please exit to the right.

no, youre right...it is PC gamers. And frankly, it is getting to the point where I am ashamed to call myself a "PC Gamer"...I feel like I should just refer to myself as a "gamer". I used to be able to say "PC Gamer" with pride...not so much any more.

Seems like in the past few months all rational thinking, forgiveness, understanding, and compassion has left these boards and been replaced with hair-trigger rage response.

"RAH RAH RAH this game cost 59.99!"

"Rabble rabble rabble this game has taken a step forward and improved enjoyment while requiring less effort, I DEEM THEE CONSOLIZED!"

"SAY WHAAAAAAAAAA?! A trivial fault ("dont turn off your console") has been allowed into our PC game! TAINT! I sense a demonic console taint in my beloved PC Game! Rabble rabble!"

Its getting out of hand folks. My advice is to grab a beer, get a massage, go for a run, lift some weights, work hard at your job, go to ****..and come home and unwind with a good game, and overlook whatever minor, trivial, unimportant, noninfluential faults it might have.

After all, my brothers and sisters of PC gaming....nothing is perfect, but we've been blessed with dozens, if not hundreds, of exclusive and multiplatform titles that have come close. Quit biting the hand that feeds you. And if something rubs you the wrong way, well, go play something else instead of campaigning against it.

What difference does it makewhy the error occured? What I want to know is why they didnt fix it. Theirs no way they didnt catch this before release and common sense tells me getting rid of a message is easier than fixing a bug.

My guess is they left it in as a joke, especially with the whole Crysisstart messageoutcry.

Gee nerds will moan about anything. Valve is the best thing that happened to PC gaming and honestly if all some people have to complain about is the word 'console' appearing in their PC game they had better crawl out of their hole and start to live a little!

These petty complaints about Portal 2 are so desperate it's hilarious.

Makes me rather ashamed to be a PC gamer. So many self-entitled morons out there looking to pick at the most inconsequential things.

Actually read their response. It's perfectly valid - the 'don't turn off your console', if you've ever been involved in Q&A of games development, it's stuff like this that sticks out, same with the 'press start to continue'. Valve slipped up naming it,and it's been renamed to 'saving game'. Anyway

Agreed. It's a ridiculous sense of entitlement. While I can agree with criticisms of lets say, Crysis 2, these are as petty and cringe worthy as they come.

 and LOL thats the damn point. That they didnt bother with that. In past pc gamers were like "valve is pc first then consoles...insert other nonsense here" Yet those things have been debunked. Valve is no better than anyone else, they make games the exact same game and that they left stuff like that only to patch them later only shows their respect for us, let alone locking the threads. I am not gonna argue about it. When i read their excuses it was all "excuses" and inconsistant crap. Also hats!!! Valve is turning like everyone else, might as well scrap them from the dedidcated pc develeops list. Its like crytek, they pretend they care about the complains and patched the press start with a press enter (which wouldnt be there to begin with if they actually cared) and the first thing you get after that is a "adjust your TV brightness settings" It seems bothering to fix those things is too much and they can be completly shameless about it. Might as well ignore it, i am done with those excuses, thinking that everyone called mw2 a bad port because of no lean and dedicated servers but now its the standard for all games and they accept it, only disgust me in how much hypocracy there is here....and thiking about it, mw2 was a much better "port" than half the multiplats here including black ops...oh well, but who cares?

The fact people complain about THIS in particular is absolutely sad. Entitled gamers demand perfection and then whine kicking and screaming when their impossible-to-reach expectations are never met. It is truly baffling. People consistently use the Hats from TF2 as the quintessential example of Valve turning into just like every other company out there, being "evil incarnate", and puppy kickers. The truth of the matter is, using Hats is an absolutely terrible example as it is NOTHING like a majority of the DLC currently out there, and it actually paints the company in a positive light.

1. Actual "DLC" or downloads that add gameplay content have been free dating back to Team Fortress Classic.

2. The DLC currently being sold adds nothing but cosmetic changes that do not influence or affect other player's gameplay or enjoyment much at all.

3. The big one: Nearly EVERY item that can be purchased can eventually be acquired through NORMAL gaming methods absolutely FREE.

If people actually opened their eyes and looked at the evidence, we'd probably have a lot less whiners and idiots running out there. I sorely doubt it though. I'm starting to agree with the console crowd, PC Gamers really are the whiniest bunches of elitists out there. No wonder so many companies are turning their back on us. It's absolutely shameful.

I have no issue with a stringtable problem, I just wish I could up the FOV a bit. I get a little motion sick from this game, it's too zoomed in.

I know it was an honest mistake so I wouldn't say anything bad about valve because of it. The part I think is funny though, is that they could have avoided all this and just replaced the word "console" with "system" which works for every platform. Oh well.

I haven't played the game, so I can't really comment on that particular 'console' oversight or FOV. Though, If it doesn't ruin the game play experience, I say let it go. This whole rage about Valve doing consoles isn't exactly news, I'm happy that they're able to bring their proficiency on to other platforms. I wish they make more money so they can develop more games and keep Steam running.

mkaliaz

I don't think they are allowed to do that on the console, the message has to use the word "console" if it doesn't the game fails certification. I personally don't consider Valve "PC developers" they haven't been PC developers for years. But I do find it interesting how people seem to give Valve a blank cheque for this kind of crap, if this had been any other developer the majority of PC gamers would have been screaming "console port, there is your proof a console save game screen", but nope not if it is Valve. If Valve do it then it was just a "simple, honest mistake".

In nearly every way Portal 2 is another Crysis 2 with limited options (compared to the previous Portal), console save screens. weak graphics and low quality textures and to top it all off Valve have done Day 1 DLC, hell even Crytek didn't try that. Yet a lot of PC gamers criticised the hell out of Crytek for Crysis 2 but Valve ohhhhhhhh no "thou shall not criticise Valve whatsoever".

A while ago I've said that gamers are the most spoiled, ungrateful kind of 'fans' that cater towards ANY medium. And as time went on, I find that 80% of that statement is directed towards the attitude of PC gamers. Sometimes they have a point, but other times the stuff they whine about is not only immature, but pathetic. They frequently turn a blind eye towards the actual steps of video game development nowadays and its boatload of different factors for the developers to consider to stay afloat. If they did, maybe they'd be a little more grateful.

Exactly

When Crysis 2 did this people were up in arms calling it a console port, however when valve does it everyone defends them saying its not a big deal, valve is the only one keeping pc gaming alive yada yada. Valve is the most overrated game developer that ever existed imo, I only like steam from them

People complain about a lot of things, even if they're clueless (yes Crysis 2 looks amazing compared to Crysis 1, but hey they have an excuse, those that hate it most likely never played Crysis in an urban environment - we'll see who was right when tropical mods get made in a few months), but that doesn't mean everyone should be clueless, Portal 2 is no port, options are just like in L4D 2 (OMG :O maybe that too was a port, or L4D) there was just a single word that showed us all this internet stupidity and it's obvious you didn't play it so, yeah. I'm not mad about Valve since they only make FPSs, but they make fantastic games (most of them), for example Portal 2, it didn't get lots of 10 and 9.4-9.6 for no reason or because Valve "bought" something.

Didn't bother is different to missed. Having played through the game, it's very evident it's not a game that was 'shunned from the PC' or not given the appropriate focus. It's a minor fault, and compared to the array of bad multiplatform games that pop up, it's an absolute joke that people are up in arms about it. If it said 'press start' on a spalsh screen then there might be half a point.

If the loading screen said "This is a console port. It was intended for consoles and we just put it on the PC just to make an extra buck. Haha, you bought into our scam" and the game was still good I still wouldn't care. A good game is a good game is a good game, no matter what it was originally made for.
