http://www.gamespot.com/news/valve-reveals-steam-controller-with-touch-screen-haptic-feedback-6415065

Portal and Half-Life studio Valve today announcedthe Steam Controller, which features a touch-screen and haptic feedback.

"We set out with a singular goal: bring the Steam experience, in its entirety, into the living-room. We knew how to build the user interface, we knew how to build a machine, and even an operating system. But that still left input--our biggest missing link," Valve said. "We realized early on that our goals required a new kind of input technology--one that could bridge the gap from the desk to the living room without compromises. So we spent a year experimenting with new approaches to input and we now believe we've arrived at something worth sharing and testing with you."

According to Valve, the Steam Controller will work with all past, present, and future games on Steam, including those that were not built with controller support. Valve can achieve this by "fooling" the older games into thinking they are being played with mouse and keyboard.

In explaining its design philosophy for the Steam Controller, Valve said traditional gamepads "force us to accept compromises.

"The Steam controller offers a new and, we believe, vastly superior control scheme, all while enabling you to play from the comfort of your sofa," Valve said. "Built with high-precision input technologies and focused on low-latency performance, the Steam controller is just what the living-room ordered."

This is a breaking news story

Man, you are on a roll today! Great thread(s). I like the concept of the "touch" twin sticks. This should be interesting. I'd buy the controller just to give it a try. If the feedback on the touch controls are excellent, I'll buy it.

Looks potentially revolutionary, tho fighting games might not work that well with it....

I'm supportive of this. It combines both simplicity and precision.

Hope it works well, nothing has changed much since the PS1 controller, this could be the biggest leap forward, or just be forgotten in a year.

The design is cool as hell looking. However, most games support the xbox360 pad atm.

If you read, it can be 'seen' as a mouse and keyboard so can work for every game. Anyway it certainly looks interesting, I'm not sure on the touchpads but they wouldn't be releasing it unless they had positive feedback from testing.

Games built with Xbox360 pad in mind.

It all comes down to the touchpads, it could be horrible or great. Either way, it's good to see something different and I'm looking forwad to trying it.

For years now PC gamers have been trying to find an alternative to their Keyboard and Mouse controls. Valve finally delivers. Lol, not!

Looks pretty interesting. I don't understand the hate it gets since you can't possibly know how it feels yet. Better to have something new rather than a 360 clone IMO. It's not like Valve is going to force anyone to use it instead of M/K or a regular pad...

Of course I'll reserve my final judgement until I actually use one though.

Its already been shown before that touch analog pads instead of analog sticks are pretty poor in terms of feedback for the user. Not sure why they went with this decision. Having a touch pad in the middle is good enough, as the PS4 shows.

It's really interesting. I don't think anyone saw this coming. I'm pretty skeptical about how well it works for everything, but we'll see.

Now I really wanna try it out, but it definitely looks bad. It wouldn't replace a single KB+M setup for sure but maybe it'll be good for some kind of games. Who knows, I mean they must've tested it at some point so it should be usable.

Wow, I would have never guessed that steam would go for the haptic feedback "sticks". That's pretty darn cool looking, especially if it works as well as they claim it does. Go lord Gabben! images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTtTbx0V-9LMojaE0X-zPx

Looks very interesting. Glad Valve is trying to innovate in an industry with very few innovators. Personally, I'd love to get my hands on this. Controllers, for me, make FPS games unplayable on a competitive level. Maybe this controller could change things up.

It's an interesting concept. I dont think the intent of the controller is to provide their own brand of traditional controller. Rather, it's their alternative to M/KB for games that dont support traditional/existing controllers, which makes up the majority of their existing library (and hence why they show those mascots playing Civ 5 on a lounge/living room). But call me a little skeptical. Assuming it works well, I still cant see it being able to effectively cover all popular PC games--StarCraft 2, LoL/MOBAs and most MMOs--all that well with the amount of functions/inputs these games have.

I'd be willing to try it. It seems like it might be very natural to just slide your fingers around and use the tingle you feel from friction to guide the movements.

While I don't think it will replace all those "competitive" gaming mouse and keyboards the more serious PC gamers prefer to use, it certainly looks like a nice controller to have for those who really prefer gaming in the living room.

i think it could be really good. apart from the obvious, what could make this a hit is all the small things. valve claims that it's going to be very hackable, and because the thumbsticks have been replaced by a high res touchpad, any game that could be played with an actual laptop touchpad should work just as well or better with this. with family sharing, steambox, and this, valve is clearly trying bring consolites into pc gaming. even if it doesn't appeal to the hardcore pc gamers, it has the potential to make pc gaming better for everyone in the long run.

ROFL, yeah that would be nice. Id probably end up just using this as a remote for media PC but 75% off would be nice.

Meh,  as far as pc game contols go, I'm in the "don't fix what ain't broke" crowd with mouse and keyboard.  This new controller is only about making pc gaming possible from "the comfort of your living room sofa."   This excellent gaming wireless keyboard and mouse I have been using from my sofa for years just must have all been my imagination.

PC gamers have always prided themselves as having the superior game controlling with Kb/m.  Now Valve is looking to diminish that and blur the lines between pc and console controllers.  Yes, I know kb/m will still be possible with Steam machine, but that's not what Valve is pushing for.  So expect future Valve games to be less kb/m friendly (assuming Valve still makes games . . .).

I need to know what makes this better than an Xbox One controller.  I'll have a keyboard & mouse, Xbox 360 controller and Xbox One controller.  Valve needs to prove to me why I need this peripheral as well.

realguitarhero5
this controller is compatible with all (all) games in the steam library, and can fool games into thinking it is a mouse/keyboard, affording you the precision of a mouse in a pre-xbox era game with a controller. i don't know if a normal xbox or xbox one controller can act as a mouse or keyboard but even if it could, it could never be as precise as a touchpad. valve also want this to be hackable so maybe it can be used as remote for a normal windows machine. having said that, this peripheral isn't for everyone, and valve have stated as such.
