im totally confused by all the choices! haha.

is it Bloodlines? or Redemption?
Anyways It depends on your playstyle, I like to be the persuasive kind, and I do like to have some decent combat abilities, so I usualy chose a Toreador.
Brujah are way more fighter orientated, but very little social skills.
Malcavians are pretty fun, but I would not recommend it on your first playthrough, theyre quite powerful tho.
The Blood mages (always forgets thier name, theyre not really vampires, as such) Are very good at dealing massive damage, but they are not physsically as fit.
I would not pick the Nosferatu, since people are not allowed to see you, so the game gets quite dull, when all you see is the sewers.
There is another Social vampire kind I always forget, Lacroix is one of those, they are also very efficiant at social skills, and can even dominate people they are ok at combat.
DO remember to apply the unofficial community patch, at patch scrolls, otherwise the game aint working too well, and firearms are gimped.
I played once with Ventrue and once with Tremere. both are good for beginners. but the gameplay actually isn't as varied as the choices suggest. just make sure you can talk, hack and pack a punch. that's all you need to complete the game.
i was leaning towards the Toreador because they seem more like the Dracula type vampires. what should i focus on if i play one? and are they more fit for guns or melee?
guns are absolutely worthless in the game, i wouldn't spend even a point on it.
Toreador... well... iirc it has a speed boosting skill. a strong melee ability will go well with that. dump points on wits whenever you can, it's the most cost effective stat. and like i said... invest some points on persuasion and hacking as well. and then you're set.
oh, remember to update the game with the community patchs.
I tend to like guns alot in the game ^^ but as stated, it requires the latest unofficial patch if they have to be any power.
with a high firearm skill, the 44. 50. and sniper rifle all decks a vampire in 1-2 shots, Ironicly the guns also hurt more when you are at the wrong end.
Social skills are very effective in the game, most fights is a whole lot easier if you have good speech, or avoided completely.
Yeah Ventrue ^^ thats the name.
Well the Toreadore is sort of the classical vampire, and his ability to move faster (slow down time) is really effective later on, when it comes to combat. The rest of his skills are fairly "meh" who, so better to focus on traits.
I don't see why guns are useless.. the SPAS-15 is pretty awesome. I'm already maxed in melee but there are some times that it seems easier to do a lot of damage with some of the firearms. The shotguns have pretty high lethality ratings (good against supernatural beings).
If it's your first time playing, why don't you just use the questionnaire/character generator? And then change one or two things around as you see fit. I used that and it auto-generated a Malkavian character for me, with a mix of skills. I might've changed around a couple things, like a point in melee instead of unarmed, and nothing in sneak (you can get a book that will give you a point).. but overall I think the character generator did pretty well in guessing what I'd want to play as :D
edit: Maybe that's why I don't think guns are worthless.. using the unofficial patch.
Malkavian, although it will make any subsequent play-through a little less enjoyable because they are simply a riot to play. Honestly, no matter which clan you pick the game is good fun so pick something that interests you.
Also, make sure you get the latest fan made patch and have fun playing one of the last truly good PC RPGs.
guns are absolutely worthless in the game, i wouldn't spend even a point on it. Jinroh_basic
Guns are not worthless IF you spend experience points on the required skills to use them effectively (perception, firearms). I had no problems/complaints with either the .44 Colt Anaconda, .50 Desert Eagle or even the Glock; the Semi-auto Shotgun (Spas-15) packs quite a punch, and the STEYR AUG is decent too. The only real garbage weapon is the Ingram Mac-10, I never use it.
Spend your points on Melee or Brawl (depending on your playstyIe) early in the game, as they're the most effective combat skills to use in Santa Monica and Downtown LA --when you get to Hollywood invest points in Firearms to prepare yourself for Chinatown.
Regarding clans, I'd recommend either the TREMERE (spend points on Thaumaturgy, very powerful discipline!) or TOREADOR (persuasion or seduction feats to expand your dialogue options; and upgrade Presence discipline).
The Malkavians are riotously funny (great dialogue options), and should be used at least once, preferably on your 2nd playthrough - and you will play the game more than just once, it's that good! 8)
:edit:
Don't even think about playing vtmb without the latest Unofficial Patch
