1. When I open HL2 or the mod Smod to access the start window, it always crashes with the error: "The Instruction at 0x####### referenced memory at 0x####### The memory could not be read." It doesn't do this for CSS, although that is where my next problem comes from. 2. In CSS, when I load a public server that is not mine, I spawn with my hands/weapons spasming back and forth and I'm stuck to the ground. Also, the spectator mode is glitched up, and I'm stuck in a random spot only able to look around my surrounding, no matter which setting it is on. 3. This may also be a problem somehow related to CSS. Sometimes I randomly lose control of my volume. I can still mute/un-mute it with my keyboard, but when I click on Volume Control on my taskbar or from my Control Panel, I get the error message: "There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, go to Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Add Hardware. This program will now close." This however can be fixed by rebooting the computer. It may be related to CSS because whenever I open the start window for it I notice there is no sound. I'm probably wrong about this part, because the random sound problem could have started just before I opened CSS; I just though this could be important.
As you can see, my gaming has always been quite problematic and I am very frustrated with it. I'm 99% certain my drivers are the source of the problem, but I don't know which drivers need to be updated. I do not even know what kind of motherboard I have because my computer is a pre-built HP with a new Nvidia graphics card. Does anyone know which drivers need to be updated, how to do this, and how to find out what type of motherboard I have? I really hope I can finally solve all of these problems one and for all. Please help me!
With some testing, I've found out that HL2 works perfectly when the sound is set to -nosound in the properties box. Besides the CS:S thing. it seems that 2 of my problems are due to sound issues. I checked the Control Panel on Sound Devices and it says they're all working normally. Where do I find the right drivers for sound devices? BTW the specs for my computer are here: http://tinyurl.com/38uewh
