Very disturbing Issue

Recently my brother got a hold of my new PC that I built. It started running incredibly slow so I did an adware check with AVG and came up with 198 infections. No suprise, seeing as my brother is an idiot. So right in the middle of the scan, my computer suddenly locks up. I restart it, and i get an error in DOS saying windows is missing a file. Great. So i pull out the Windows XP OEM version I purchased with the computer and start doing a system restore. It tells me I need to install it on a partion, so I create one. THen it tells me it needs to be formated so I start formatting it. I leave it for 8 hours, and it's only at 27%

Im clueless. Do i just leave it running? Or is there a quicker way of going about this?

I deleted the old partition, then created a new one. once I tried installing the operating system on that partition, it says it needs to be formatted.

does formatting normally take this long?? I never remembered it taking more than 8 hours.

For some reason it does not allow me to do a "quick" format. it tells me to "Make sure drive is switched on and properly connected to your computer. If the disk is a SCSI make sure SCSI devices are properly terminated. Must select different partition."

But when i select a different option it begins formatting. Soooo clueless

If you have another computer, put an image of Active@killdisk on a flash drive. In your computer's BIOS, change the first boot device to 'peripheral' or whatever looks like it will boot from the flash drive. Connect the flash drive and reboot to wipe the HDD.

It'll take a while, but it will destroy any old partitions and viruses on the hard disk.

well does it still boot?

if it does then I recommend saving the info you need and then just completely reformatting it. Don't bother with the system restore, they don't always work anyway.

Another option if you can boot up is to try and roll back the system to a previous date. I've had to do that before to get rid of a virus. Thats the system restore option under the 'my computer' properties. Cause to be honest I dunno what you were trying to do earlier.

The operating system is completely gone, so there's no way to boot up

and i have NO clue how to seperate a "bad" sector and make it a seperate partition. lol

hey dont feel bad, I had the sparta virus.. talk about disturbing.

If you dont know what sparta virus is, its that h0mo from 300 and he dances on my screen saying THIS IS SPARTA!! 100 times.

But I digress. try quick format.

If your luck is as bad as mine, it might just be incredibly slow. Make sure it won't go past 27% if you try that again by leaving it on for a while.

I remember when I had trouble with my harddrive I had to go into safe mode. I did it at around 9pm and was up until about 4am (I stay up late), playing video games and such. And sure enough it finally went through.. Just took seven hours to get into it.

well it didnt work.

left it on last night, and it stopped at 26%. so i split the hard drive by 26% and tried quick formatting it. It gave me the same error "Check connections, SCSI blah blah blah"

Im thinking i just need a new hard drive. really REALLY lame.
