I bought a Dell XPS M1330

My specs:
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7250 (2MB cache/2.0GHz/800Mhz FSB), English, Genuine Windows® Vista Ultimate Edition SP1
4GB Shared Dual Channel DDR SDRAM at 667MHz
LCD Standard Display with 2.0 Megapixel Integrated Webcam
128MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 8400M GS
Hard Drive 250G 5400RPM SATA HDD
8X CD/DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability
Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy HD Software Edition
Dell Wireless 1505 Wireless-N Mini-card
Built In Bluetooth capability (2.0 EDR)

When I google I get conflicting ideas about what I can run on this - can you guys help. Can I run Crysis (even at lower settings)? STALKER? COD4?

Okay so can someone actually explain since I already mentioned I'm NEW to this. Why ouch? What's a good upgrade etc.? Seriously, what's with the attitudes, just explain it or don't post in here. This isn't system wars.

Well, you should be able to play most Dx9 games decently on low or medium settings. I think... But the 8400M GS isn't a very powerful video card, so don't expect to get much gaming mileage out of that system.

Your video card isn't meant for gaming, but more for a media center PC. If you want to play games on it, you will definitely need to buy a new video card.

How much do you want to spend on a upgrade? For 100$ you can get a 8600. For 200$ you can get a 4850.

It is a laptop, he can't put a 4850 in there. He probably can't upgrade the GPU.

Basically your laptop is not made for gaming, and you were ripped off by Dell because for a XPS that probably cost you more than $1000, that is a pretty (not bad) but dissapointing laptop. You are going to need to upgrade your video card, and upgrading latops is always a pain in the ass. That is your situation.

Crysis on the lowest of low, if you can even run it at all, and CoD 4 at low. Just about any game that is 2006 + is going to have to be run at low settings.

Thanks for the responses everyone. This laptop is mainly for school and work so I'm not too worried because at the end of the day, I thought gaming would be a nice bonus.

Can someone explain to me why there's so many YouTube videos of guys supposedly playing Crysis on M1330s???

http://youtube.com/watch?v=fd4tBjoT08E

They seem to be running smoothly? Or are these fakes??

Crysis would run fine at everything on low at 1024-768 the framerate wouldn't be that great but I think it would be playable.

Stalker and COD4 are more than playable if you keep them at 1280*1024 or lower with some things bumbep to medium quailty nothing more.

The 8400 runs as well as a 7600gs with modern games and it fairs quiet fine at lower resolutions... just dont expect anything more than medium quiltiy if you want a steady framerate.

This is a good card and would suit perfectly as a shoe in untill you can afford anupgrade... but if your happy with the performance you get from it their would be no need for an upgrade.

Infact my laptop has the same GPU and it runs my fravourite game CSS at high settings with a very steady 40-60FPS at 1280*720, and the BF2 runs great at medium as well as Oblivion with bloom view distance 100% including the "make it pretty mod".

you should sell ur laptop back to dell if possible and put a better video card else you got Screwed that mainly why i don't play my game on laptop if id buy one it would as to have upgradable video card and cpu if possible. with motherbord but not look like we are near it before 2014+ before laptop finaly are made like a pc.
so if i buy a laptop id probably spend it for half way gaming just slow game. like when i used to go to vacation then
id put the remamiong money on a like Sli or Tri sli GTx 280 who now lost 90$ in price that make me cheer up =) finaly nvidia is lowering price to fight against ATI 90$ make a differance :P

Thanks for this! How much would the framerate improve if I chose a lower resolution that 1024-786?

Like I said, the gaming is a bonus, not the main intention so I don't mind playing on low settings - my workload is too heavy right now for gaming to be more than an occassional release

Lower the resolution lower than 1024*768 wouldn't give much of a boost at most it would give you an extra 5fps with moder games... but in all honest use the native resolution of the screen and work the settings around that for the best performance/quaility ratio.

From experiance the 8400 is a nifty laptop GPU it will play most games at medium and some of the more demanding ones at low, but the majority of the games I have tested i,e oblivion and HL2 engine based games run great on the card and I still use my laptop for some heavy Counter Striking lan parties.

If you dont expect much from the card it will suprise you at what settings it runs some newer games lile Stalker/the Whitcher.

Thats wierd. He's running it more effectively than my 7900GS ran it, and I'm pretty sure a 7900GS is faster than a M1330.

Damn, 8400M GS? 128MB?

You can forget about the new games, you might be able to play COD4 on low settings.

But hey, at least you could play some older games like starcraft and WoW..........How much did you get the laptop for btw?

Well I don't think that the card will run the above mentioned games however the rest of your hardware is solid. I would suggest upgrading to a 256mb card within the Nvidia 7 or 8 series.

oh well then I would look at your XPS as a biggger PSP with a word processor. Sorry but that's just about all I can say seeing as mobile upgrades are quite typically a can of worms.

Wow, I'm surprised it's running that smoothly. Yours may be able to do OK with games after all.

You do have a very good processor and 4 gigs of RAM, that can make a big difference and allow a weak video card to perform halfway decently. Just make sure you turn the graphics settings all the way down (I guarantee that guy on youtube did).
