I currently have a Geforce 7900gt and its starting to crap out (texture tears, articfacts, dead pixels) so im in the process of purchasing a new videocard. I dont have much money but i was going to choose between a 7600gt or an 8600gt. My processor is an AMD 3800+ 2.4Ghz (not dual core) and I have 2gigs of RAM. Im not sure which video card would be best with what I have and still allow me to have good performance in games.

The 8600 is better than the 7600 and will perform about the same as your old 7900gt.

8600GT will be the card closest (And sometimes even beating, but not too often) beating your 7900GT.

Next step up from there is the Radeon HD 3850.
