Right now I have an XFX GeForce 6800 xt 256 MB PCI-e. I want to upgrade but i don't know if i should do SLI and get the same exact card or just get a brand new card. What I am wondering is how much of a boost will I get if I jump to say an 8600 256 instead of doing SLI? And with DirectX 10 coming out, a while ago I know, should I just bite the bullet and spend the extra for a DX10 card. Any help is appreciated.

I would imagine you'd see a bigger performance jump going straight to the 8600. However, I know that when your particular card came out there was quite a bit of talk concerning it being a very good choice for a cheap but powerful SLI rig. If you're not willing to spend the money to make the big plunge, then I don't think it's a bad choice to just do SLI. Those cards are no longer that expensive.

well assuming no budget limits get an 8800GTX or GTS. the x1950 Pro is also an option, but my personal taste tends to favor NVIDIA. if your not pressed for a card tho, i would give it a month or 2 and see what gets announced. there may be price cuts in the near future, with the next gen of cards looming.

An 8600GT performs a bit better than a 6800GT and a bit worse than a 6800 Ultra. I know that a 6800XT is a bit slower than a GT or Ultra, but I really think that to get a decent performance increase you should get at least an 8600GTS. The other option is maybe a X1950Pro if you don't need DirectX 10.

8600GT performs close to the X1950GT which in turn is MUCH better than ANY 6800 Ultra...

As far as I know, a 8600GT is pretty much only as good as a 7600GT with DirectX 10. Or at least that is what I have read. So if that is the case, it wouldn't be anywhere near as good as a X1950GT.

Have you read ANY newer benchies? http://anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3023&p=6

With newer drivers the 8600GT comes close to the 7900GS and/or X1950GT,and thats from a few months ago at that, with newer drivers, they would surely come even closer if not on par with them.

go for a x1950pro/gt/7900gs/7950gt you would never find one of those old cards today and a single 7 series beats them in sli

If you really want a DX10 card on a budget - then the 8600GT is an good card to get - otherwise the X1950 Pro or 7900GS will be more than enough.
