As you can see, I'm not going for anything super expensive like Nvidia's new GTX 28x series. I'd like one of the cards here (or similar) and if you think I should look at a specific brand, then I will. I've got a budget of around 200, but if Ati's 4000 series is worth saving up for, then I shall.

Your setup is similary to mine (E6600, 2GB G.Skill DDR2 800 X1900XT(X), Gigabyte 965P-DS3 motherboard), and I'm most likely going to get the HD4850 as an upgrade. I'd suggest you do the same.

Well what kind of gaming do you plan to do? The next gen Nvidia options don't seem worth it right now, and it's been said that the upcoming options from Ati lean towards mid-range ability.

SLI can only be done by nvidia cards, Crossfire is the equivalent of SLI in ATI cards.

The 4850 is coming this 25th, the 4870 the 8th of july.

$2k is a lot of money, you can go ultra high end with that budget.

Ill start searching for parts.

edit:

Motherboard: X48 DFI lanparty $224.99

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 $269.99

2x Memory: Corsair XMS2 2GB $58.99 -> $33.00 MIR ($117.98 -> $66.00)

HDD: WD 500GB $79.99

DVD: LG Black 22x $27.99

PSU: Thermaltake W0131RU 850w $299.99 -> $189.99 MIR

Case: Thermaltake Armor Series VA8000BWS $144.99

Total $1065.92

If you grab a GTX280 the total would be around $1725 and it fits your budget :) Leaving room for extra upgrades you can pick yourself.

Crossfiring 2 4870 should also be around $600 so $1665

Doubtful. Perhaps the 4870x2 would be a better competitor.

4850x2 should be a good competition to a OCed GTX280.

You mean 2 4850s in Crossfire? And an OCed 280? Whoo, that thing will put out some numbers...

It (4870X2) did score higher than 280GTX in latest 3d mark on Computex. Also nvidia's coming up with so called 9800GTX+ in 55nm with little different G92b core. Should come around 300$ and compete with 4850.
