What resolution do you play at ? I ask because theres not reason to buy a $500-$600 card if your resolution isn't very high since a card for a fraction of the price could max your games.

Yeah, if you can spend a 100 dollars more, get the 4870x2. But like someone said, tell what is the resolution you play it.

i wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the 9800gx2! If it was still at it's original price, i would agree, but after price drops:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130338

It is now $284.99!

Cheapest 4870x2 is $559 at newegg

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102768

this review is a good comparison between the two:

The HD4850 is more than enough for that res.

Edit: Is this what you play at or is it the highest res your monitor can go?

If thats your resolution then you need to go no higher than a HD4850 since its alot cheaper than the other cards and should max almost all your games.

you talking about the shrink die of GTX280? (New nvidia)

^^can't see that happen for awhile.

Ant yes, your monitor is very old i guess, there is no reason to get a great GPU when you play at very low resolution.

HD4850 will take you very far on 1280*1024. (even HD3850 will do.)

Average price for 4870X2 = $550

Average price for 9800GX2 = $280

As far as GPU performance goes, the 4870X2 is better. But the GTX280 and 9800GX2 are right behind it, so close that it doesn't deserve to be dismissed so ignorantly. Go with the 9800 GX2, the performance boost from the 9800 GX2 to the 4870X2 isn't justifiable for an extra $270... And even if you do want to save up the extra $270, it'd be much sweeter to purchase an additional GX2 so that you can SLI those bad boys. So if you were to ask me (and not the 1,2,3,4,5 Hokage's), getting the 9800 GX2 is your absolute best option.

that a wrong thinking swehunt not to blame you bugt 3870 is just around 5% bett rhen my 7600GT XXX edition and I hate it :) CAUSE IT LAG IN OBlviion with all amx on 1280x1024.. so id get nothing else then 4850-4870 / 9800GX2 / or 4870x2 but it true you need a better monitor so you should see if you can get 9800GX2 on sales. around 280$
then save money for a 1920x1200 monitor of 24 inch
once you do you will get if you have money... then you should go 9800GX2 should Last Good time. and offer you enough money to buy teh monitor then in 1 year after or so you can go straigh R800 for 8th generaiton of Radeons Lil Dragons or GTX 300. Series as 11th Generation of nvidia GPU
