My brother is having me fix his girlfriend's laptop. She downloaded a lot from Limewire and got a lot of viruses. The computer is kind of old and she doesn't have the Windows disc. So I can't re-install Windows, and it's too old to run anything besides XP. I've scanned it with Kaspersky, Malwarebytes, Spybot S&D, and Super Anti Spyware. Kaspersky wouldn't even install. It told me the install was blocked, that the machine was likely infected, and to download a removal tool. I ran them all in safe mode and they all found stuff. The big problem is that it won't connect to the internet, and I assume that's because of the viruses. So none of the scanners can download databases. I am about to install Spyware Terminator and ESET Nod 32 and run scans with those. But, I looked it up on here. Apparently you can make a Linux Boot Disc and clean Windows that way. If I do this, would I be able to clean up Windows easier? And isn't Linux run from a command prompt? I wouldn't really know how use it, but I have to clean out the computer the best I can.

Ask her if she's willing to backup her data and let you do a reformat. That's by far the most efficient way to whip out viruses - the speed boost is icing on the cake.

Honestly, you would do best to contact a local computer shop and try to get a old windows disk from them (I have one around me who was selling 35 dollars windows xp home editions).. If the viruses are that far deep, it would just be better to reformat and start over.

Can I do that without any discs? She already backed everything she wants to up.

But they will need to back up their data and there would be a good chance that the virus would also get backed up. Either way you need to face it. OP follow this guide and I will be VERY surprised if you still have it afterwards: http://uk.gamespot.com/users/Daytona_178/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=m-100-25557451&tag=all-about;blog1

I've thought of that, but it doesn't connect to the internet. She says it hasn't since sometime in July.

Download Malwarebytes and then download the antimalware definitions manually/separately. Then download Sophos Anti Rootkit and run it. Finally run ComboFix. Run all of these in safe mode. Once you've done that, post a HijackThis .log file.
