i bought vista 32 bit and there was a card saying 'blah blah get the 64 bit disc from microsoft.com'

Now, i'm building a new computer and everything is set to go, except the 64 bit dvd, which will be here in ten days. can i go ahead and install all my software and then apply the update in ten days, or does it have to be a fresh install?

You could create 2 partitions and install the 32-bit version first. After your 64-bit CD arrives, install that version on the second partition. Then you can decide which OS is the best for you.

^^^ Dualboot like he said. Please note Only install 2GB of Ram until Vista is updated to SP1 or you will get a BSOD. Then install the other 2GB.
