There seems to be an option to upgrade from Vista to Win7 without having to reformat anything. I want to do this on my desktop, for the fact that I have a TON of games installed that I don't want to lose upon reformatting.

Has anyone done this before? Has it affected how any of your games run, and do your save files all work fine afterwards? Thanks.

Most of the time it should go smoothly, the save files are rarely affected by such upgrades (unless a game needs a compatibility patch that breaks saves - that is rare though). If it worked on Vista it should work fine on 7. I did the in place upgrade to the RC before 7 was released and all of my games ran fine afterwards - the only thing that really happened was that games that 'activated' needed to be reactivated as a new OS counts as a big enough upgrade to 'invalidate' activations.

Just be aware that you can only upgrade from 32 bit to 32 bit, or 64 bit to 64 bit. IMHO if you're running a 32 bit OS the time has come to back up your games and format and install the 64 bit version, but hey that's just my advice.

Yeah I kinda figured as much.... I guess I might try and beat all the sp games that are close to the end, and then reformat as well as upgrade. Will most save files on 32 bit Vista work on 64 bit Win7? It would suck to lose my Morrowind character, and it would also suck porting him to Win7 with all the gameplay mods I have installed.

Hello True_Sounds, Just an FYI, when upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7 you must upgrade the version currently installed within Windows Vista to the corresponding version in Windows 7. I.E. Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium; Windows Vista Business to Windows 7 Professional; and Windows Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Ultimate. You also cannot upgrade a 32-bit operating system to 64-bit -- to migrate from 32-bit to 64-bit will require a custom install. Please check out the requirements here for Windows 7: If you want to run Windows 7 on your PC, here's what it requires: -1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor -1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit) -16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit) -DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver You can find the official Microsoft Windows Upgrade Advisor here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/upgrade-advisor.aspx Before making any attempts at upgrading your Windows operating sytem; you should first backup all of your important data! You can also go with the easy transfer, there is a very well planned out tutorial on the microsoft site: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/help/upgrading-from-windows-xp-to-windows-7 Also, please refer to Microsoft official site: Windows 7 Compatibility: (There you will find out about hardware and software compatibilty.) http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/en-us/default.aspx There is a pulldown from which you can choose "hardware" and "software". Finally, if you want to do some research; there are also some great articles, instructional videos and such to help with your Windows 7 migration and upgrade decisions located at our Springboard site: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/default.aspx Thanks again and good luck! Thanks man. I ended up just reformatting completely and using 64 bit. Windows 7 works SO MUCH better than Vista, I'm really happy I made the switch.

I did an upgrade on my laptop and it saved all my programs and games.

I did end up reformatting with 7 a few months later, and Windows seems to run a lot better. Some drivers are working now that weren't before.

I always format at least once a year.
