Let's see...

I have Windows XP on my desktop right now, and my friend just got a laptop w/ Vista pre-installed...

I wanted to know if it was possible for me to make a backup of my XP and get rid of Vista on his laptop - replacing it w/ my backup of XP that i would get on my computer.

So, #1 is can i actually do this? (i don't have the XP install or restore CD or anything)

and #2 is how would i go about doing all this?

Thanx SOOO much in advance! :D

wont work, xp has to be installed, you can't just copy it. and 2 m$ only lets you runs windows on one system at once

Can be done - but ain't recommended at all, actually, don't bother.

Your XP was install with your computer settings, transferring it to the laptop is not only sloppy, it would most likely not work since the laptop and computer specs would be different.

You're better off formatting that laptop hard drive and putting XP back in there by actually installing it. Since you don't have a XP install disc, you will have to find a way to get one.
