should i buy windows vista or XP?

im concerned that vista isnt done developing enough for me to consider wasting my money on an operating system that wont be the norm for at leasta year or 2. i also heard that XP runs easier on your pc than vista.its between

If I were you I'd go for Vista, it's only going to get better as updates and service packs are released. Any new PC can run Vista. + you'll have DX 10 or 10.1 in the future. But I'm no expert, so listen to what others have to say.

Since your getting a new PC theres no sense in going back to XP. While i still think XP is better, Microsoft will work out the kinks with Vista.

2 gigs of RAM is pretty much a must for a gamer now. Just look at the recommended specs for Bioshock. Hell, even FEAR from '05 plays better with more RAM.

You think getting 4 gigs at this point is a waste of money?

Right now? Yes. By the time Crysis comes out? Have no idea. Probably still a waste though. It's always smart to wait with the upgrades until you know what games you're interestred in actually require. FEAR made me upgrade my RAM.

Yeah I'll probably stick with 2 gigs for awhile and then upgrade when need be. RAM is cheap anyway.

If you are building a new PC go with 64bit Vista! That's the next gen OS; not the crippeled 32bit version! Wait a couple years though. XP is a solid platform and Vista is still slightly unstable. Just make sure the hardware you buy now is Vista 64bit capable.

Why do I have a feeling that Microsoft will release a peace of software that can convert a 32-bit OS to a 64-bit one. Anyways, Vista is the future whether we like it or not -- if you can get the hardware to run Vista do it. If you are a gamer 2GB + Ram is a must! Games today running on Vista run well past the 1GB mark.

As Spiffo said, Vista is still slightly unstable. Now depending how much your willing to spend is a question.
I personally wouldnt get vista, Id stick with XP as Windows 7 will be out in 3 years. Vista phailed as far as MS is concerned. It was mainly made or media and gaming, so if thats all your wanting then thats up to you, Just remember, do you want to buy a new OS now, or make do for another 3 years and get windows 7..

Techtarget Article Link Its mainly directed at businesses, the article, but incase ppl didnt know, it confirms windows 7 in development and time frame for release.

I know. The thing is, I'd like to be able to take advantage of DX10 gaming with the new hardware I will be getting. Thats why I'd like to do the dual boot with XP along with Vista so I can put all my older games on the XP.

When the next OS comes out, I have no idea what I will be doing.

If you are dual booting then, by all means get Vista 64 bit along with XP. You'll get the best of both worlds! That's what I would do.

You're really pushing the 64-bit arent you? ;)

The machine I am likely getting is coming with 32-bit so I will have to deal with that (it cant be THAT bad), and then wait a bit before spending more money to upgrade.

Here's the thing about Vista that really ticks me off. 64 bit processors have been out for 2-3 years now. One would think the next logical progression is to make a 64bit designed OS to accomodate these new instruction sets. I mean, it happened when the 16 bit era moved to 32 bit with Win95 right!? Wrong! What the hell was M$ thinking releasing a gimpy 32 bit OS and the real 64 bit OS. Logic would tell you that you would just combine the two and have a smooth transition. 64 bit Vista can run 32 bit apps in compatibility mode, much like how XP runs Win 95 and 98 software. What's the point of the 32 bit model other than to grab people concerned about 32 bit apps. The 32 bit OS never should have been released. Do we really have to drag people kicking and screaming to make this next logical progression. The 64 bit version doesn't cost any more than the 32 bit version. Why shouldn't we move forward? What really is the point of the 32 bit Vista other than DX 10. Why do we all have 64 bit processors (Dual Core!) and no 64 bit OS to go with it. Programs will run much faster in 64 bit mode. People need to start supporting 64 bit instruction set processors. Move on; go 64!

Good post. I just didn't hear much about Vista 64-bit to feel the need to upgrade, but I will definately take it into consideration.

Since you have it, has it been pretty much a smooth operation? No bugs or games crashing, etc?

It's had it's moments but on the whole it's been about what I expected. Every new OS gives you issues untill the first SP release.

Indeed.I would imagine the first SP is around the corner anyway. I think probably early fall, like around October/November before the holidays.

What games do you have that have come out the last 3-5 years that have worked fine with the 64-bit?

I'm not a big PC gamer but Warcraft III works fine with some tinkering. The biggest deal with Vista 64 right now is drivers. You can't use 32 bit drivers and they all must be signed or they won't work at all. That's why all of your hardware should be vista certified before making the leap to 64bit. 16 bit apps also don't work. I keep XP around for compatibility. Once the 64 bit generation takes off you will hardly notice any compatibility problems with Vista 64. The hardware Mfgs just need to catch up on drivers. I wouldn't put Vista 64 on anything but a new PC.

Well if you need signed drivers you are better off just going to whatever is the manufacturer of your graphics card. I know that Nvidia has drivers for 64-bit on their site.

I can definately see myself upgrading to 64-bit in the future, but for now, I think I'm just going to go with XP/32 bit for now. I'm not really worried about it as I'm sure the upgrade is painless.

cspiffo, do you have many problems running games and apps in 64 bit? Like powerDVD and small helpful apps. I'd like to upgrade to 64-bit Vista (Bioshock is the only reason, well, and like you said my dual core 64 AMD), but all the incompatibilities worry me. What's the point in having a smooth and fast PC when you can't run certain things properly.

The incompatibilities will smooth out over time. I honestly don't have any problems with my 32 bit apps. Your ok unless you go back say 7-8 years with your apps. Some of those 32bit apps still included 16 bit code, especially in the installers. PowerDVD 7 has been updated to work properly in Vista64. Also even iff you have 16 bit "useful" apps there are people who create emulators for them. Just keep XP on a partion or seperate HDD while transition to Vista 64.

Yeah, I was planning on keeping XP either way just to be sure I can play old games like AVP2 and Undying. Somehow I doubt they will run smoothly with current Vista-drivers. Anyway, you've convinced me. Guess I'll go for the 64 bit Vista, someone has to push new technology forward by supporting it.

I felt the same way when MS announced that it would be releasing a 64bit OS and a 32bit OS. What a waste of time and resources. With that decision Microsoft has single handedly slowed the adoption of the 64-bit architecture.

Though I do remember either WIndows 95 or 98 comming with converter that could move the OS from 16 bit to 32 bit at will.

If you're going to get Vista, you HAVE to get Home Premium, there's no point to Basic. Get Vista for now, you can run DX10 with Crysis, Service Pack 1 should be coming out late this year(if not early next year).
