Do you guys play with Vsync on or off? I can't decide this!

With it on: + No tearing, - Gives mouse movement a weird feeling, - Decreased performance

With it off: + Increased performance, + Mouse feels smooth and responsive, - Tearing

I'm trying to decide what to use, but it's hard

On, otherwise i find the framerate can be to jumpy, plus i only have a 60 hz monitor so anything over that is a waste

Have you got 'Triple buffering' on with Vsync on? it 'should' give better performance.

For some strange reason, when i force Triple Buffering, performance gets worse. Also, the mouse feels horrible when i enable it

Have you tried forcing it with D3DOverrider? It comes with the newest Rivatuner.. Its Triple buffering works considerably better than the one in Nvidia Control Panel, and Catalyst Control Center.

I have gotten to the point where I do not like having V-sync off.. Its not near as smooth. Sure I get more headshots if I turn it off for Multiplayer, But I still do just fine with it on. (and its a much better visual experience)

I am very very far from an expert on this topic, but I will give a couple of thoughts. First, vsync is great if you are hitting a high frame rate on games and want to avoid terrible screen tearing. My understanding is it is primarily useful if your machine is running something very quickly.

On the other hand, my buddy has a lower end laptop he tries to game on and swears to me he got a 33-50% improvement in performance by turning vsync off for certain games that he was struggling to hit 30 FPS before. I have no idea if that is true or if my buddy is crazy or onto something but I thought it was interesting.

Depends on the game, for ex. dirt2 was fine without for me but dirt3 has terrible tearing across the screen.

I usually turn it off. I hardly notice the tearing, and v sync really screws up my fps.

Do consoles use vsync?

If my frame rate is a comfortable 60fps+, then I turn it on.

Input lag is rarely a problem for me. I only ever really get it if I turn on triple buffering as well (and even then not often)

I keep it off all the time due to input lag. After you have been running with it off for 15 years you don't even see the tearing.

Depends if I notice screen tearing or not when I move the camera. Amnesia: the Dark Decent, for example, I turn it on, because it has huge screen tearing whenever I turn. Most games play fine with it off, though.

i never use vsync. The tearing only occurs once in a while and it only lasts for a few seconds. Vsync decreases performance, however if my system completely exceeds the system requirements they i use vsync.

DEPENDS on the game... If it hits the performance a lot (noticeable) I turn if off and put up with the screen tearing... If not, I leave it on... Mouse controls same on both formats.

Alter_Echo

Agreed. I leave it off. It feels like all input is a second or two behind when I'm playing anything when I leave it on.

I leave it off when running above 60Hertz, and only turn it on at that or below when there's screen tearing. I sacrifice almost everything else if it gets rid of screen tearing.

Off, usually.. Mouse feels awful in a lot of games with it on and many don't let you disable mouse smoothing.

Always on. I have a 570 GTX, and I just can't see the point of having such a beefy card and then suffering from tearing. That's like having a Ferrari and putting on tires from Wal-mart. Why play PC games and suffer from the nasty glitching effect tearing gives. I'll test it from time to time to see where my frames are different, and the difference is usually negligible. The tearing absolutely drives me nuts. I have a hard time playing games like that.

I usually turn it off. The only time when I actually notice screen tearing is during cutscenes from Devil May Cry 4.

I turn it on if i can get 50+ fps but off for something like crysis where i only get 24fps with it one. Screen tearing doesn't bother me as much

If you can get a high fram rate with it on then go for it as it locks the fps and you're GPU doesn't have to canstantly work at changing. But if, like me, you get 24 fps playing crysis with it on then turn it off. Unless screen tearing drives you crazy

When I get high frames I leave it on, when the framerate starts to dip I turn it off and put up with the tearing.

I don't have a great PC so I always turn it off to increase performance. I really don't care about the tearing. I have an aggressive style of playing and in the middle of the action low framerate and/or mouse lag is a sure death. I'd say turn it off if you play shooters, especially online shooters. I even use a performance configs for some games that force the graphics to be incredibly low (lower than minimum settings from video options).

I only have it on if screen tearing is excessive or the game runs so well my card is actually running hotter because it is running too many fps. For demanding games I have to leave it off usually.

Is there a reason to have it on if a monitor isn't 75 Hz? I don't have any tearing on my 60 Hz monitor.

On..no matter what the game is or if there is any screen tearing to begin with. Always on... Of course my rig can play any game with it on... I don't understand how people can turn it off...the slightest screen tear is annoying.
