When I play a game with vsync I get this strange stuttering effect on the screen. It's hard to explain, but it looks as if frames are being missed or skipped, so if I'm moving a character on screen it can look like he's teleporting forward slowly when moving instead of it being a smooth movement. I can't just disable vsync because I get a lot of crashes if I do. My card is an 8800 GTX if that helps. Does anyone have any idea what this problem is?

crashes due to turning off vsync would be overheating

turn up the cooling (fan) and turn vsync off.

can't explain the stuttering, but that should fix it :-\

In the Nvidia Control Panel, change to the Advanced View. Over on the left, select 'Manage 3D Settings'. You should now be at a list called 'Global Settings'. Scroll down and enable Triple Buffering.

Did you ever sort the problem out? i bought a hd4870 a couple of weeks back and had the exact same problem i tried everything trying to stop the stuttering with v sync enabled. I ended up sending it back for a refund and sticking my 8800gts back in, but i want to upgrade and this issue is stopping me doing so. I never had a prob with crashing with v sync off just tearing which i cant put up with
