Hey everyone I've been interested in getting into RTS games. The main reason why I always avoided them was simply because I didn't like collecting resources half the time. However I've put 10-15 of hours into Age of Empires 2, C&C:Generals, WC3, and World in Conflict singleplayer campaigns and i'll say I think they're all great. Can you guys recommend me some good RTS games that I may like? I don't think i'm ready to play Sins of a Solar Empire yet so don't include that one. Oh and please try to list 3D games only. That'll help alot :)

Sup BFF! :D I'll be getting on Steam/xfire/AIM today for the first time in like... months, so I'll add you then! Just so you're not wondering.

Anyway, back on topic, definitely go for Company of Heroes. Although Dawn of War is awesome, Company of Heroes improves on it in every way and besides, DoWII is coming up pretty soon. :P

I played Rise of nations for a few hours and I loved how you go from fighting with bows and arrows to dropping nuclear bombs. However that's the perfect example of an RTS that I DONT wanna play. It took me 1 whole hour to reach the final Age........and then it got boring. World in Conflict was very unique for me because there was no base building or resourse gathering.

Starcraft, it's the best RTS ever, no matter if it's 2D, and very very different from Warcraft III.

I am in the same boat as you my friend, I cannot stand resource gathering. Try out Relic's rts games. Company of Heroes is easily the best rts I have ever played but Dawn of War is a close second.

I wouldn't try Company of Heroes as a "starter" RTS, as the AI will eat you alive. Well, would have done...
I recommend something a bit "lighter". Maybe Dawn of War and Command and Conquer 3.

If you want to check out Company of Heroes, by all means, go ahead (it's the best RTS in recent history, IMO) but it may be a little challenging. ;) (not that it's a bad thing)

That's just my view. Others may (and will) disagree.

Rise of Nations

Age of Mythology

I am not a big RTS fan, but I really enjoyed those two games. Also, warhammer 40K is very fun.

Thanks alot guys!! Oh and I didn't add Age of Mythology. It just didn't look like something I would could get hooked on.

Got a good list there! Let's see, you've got 2 Relic games, 1 Blizzard game, and 1 Creative Assembly game. Yep, you're set for some fun times! :P

I'd recommend you start with Dawn of War - there are some fairly advanced RTS things that you might not be able to get to grips with quickly, like morale and dancing with ranged and melee units, but since you've already got experience with the RTS genre, I don't think you need to start with the most basic RTS games.

If after Dawn of War you want to move up to something more refined - and also more advanced - get either Company of Heroes, or wait for Dawn of War 2's release early next year.

TBS is Turn-based Strategy. If you are looking for an RTS without economy pandering and all out unit management action go straight for DoW or CoH. If you are a fan of micro-management and epic displays go for Supreme Commander, there aren't really resources but you do have to balance just 2 things economy and energy, its simple after a while and the action is superb.

The all-time best RTS has to be Starcraft, you need this game now!

For now, as many have said, Dawn of War and Company of Heroes are win - win. And I have no doubt in my mind that dawn of war 2 will be nothing short of epic. No base-building/resource gathering + campaign co-op... it will be the ****!

I have a lot of respect for several rts devs but relic is my favorite by miles. Imho, every time they released a new rts it has been the best for it's time. Homeworld 1,2/dawn of war/coh... and with dawn of war, I really feel they did the warhammer 40k ip justice.

/relic asskissing mode off.

TBS = Turn-Based Strategy. It's quite different from RTSs - Real Time Strategy.

Wow thx for the great feedback guys. I'll avoid TBS like I was told. By the way it's sad to hear about Ensemble Studios.

Try Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth (get the chest, it includes BME I, BME II, and BME II; The Rise of the Witch King for only $20). Get Starcraft II when it comes out. Age of Mythology is really fun, too.

I didn't really like Starcraft....Dawn of War is a great start. You'll get into the battle very soon into the game. Red Alert 2 is a real starter game. It's very easy and fun.
