Hello, my mom is almost 60 years old now and she has a bit of free time. Would you recommend adequate games for her? What I'm looking for:

  • No fast reflexes required
  • Games that make you think (but not those adventure games with ridiculous puzzles like Gabriel Knight 3)
  • Games that let you be creative
  • Simple controls
  • (Optional) good story

Depends how many hours a day she can dedicate to gaming. Sounds like World of Warcraft would have been the ideal experience. Perhaps Guild Wars 2? Women are typically more social in their gaming habits than men, so I would suggest a mulitplayer co-op game.

Wow, really? Well I'm stumped then, I'm not much of an expert on single player game. Perhaps Civilization 5?

Might be too confusing for her (she has never played a videogame) but I will try anyways. I'm kinda looking for games that can be finished and then move on to another.

I understand. I'm probably not a good person to recommend a casual game like that, hehe. Wish I could help. Good luck! :)

If she doesn't care much about gaming, serious and demanding games will go nowhere, Plants vs Zombies, Braid, Luxor, Trine 1/2, Cave Story, The Cave maybe or some city builders like Sim City (if the DRM isn't a problem, because despite all the whining this game is by far the best city builder available, it's outrageously good), Tropico 3, Anno 1404, Anno 2070, Settlers 7.

Myst? The Longest Journey? They're not too complicated, good stories too.

The Broken Sword games might be worth looking at also.

TLJ is amazing, and I'm sure his mom would enjoy the story (and Dreamfall too). but some puzzles in it are impossible without a guide.

Machinarium then? Cute, lovely story, puzzles aren't overly complicated.

Terraria? Might already be bit too complicated, but nothing to worry about. Let's your creative id do its thing.

A Game Of Dwarves Build your own dwarven stronghold.

Just a game that doesn't require fast reflexes but has nice art and gameplay.

King's Bounty: The Legend

And naturally the puzzle games like bubble shooters can be played offline as well. The Sims has already been suggested.

How about a hidden object game?  There is the Mystery PI series.  Big Fish also has many games that are hidden puzzle with a little bit of adventure in them.  For the hardcore gamer they are child's play but for the casual they are actually pretty entertaining and not that difficult.  An example:  http://www.bigfishgames.com/download-games/11532/stray-souls-dollhouse-story/index.html

I'd recommend most puzzle games off of Steam, including some indie ones, because they offer a lot of hidden rewards while offering a fresh take on game. As far as a AAA title, what about Portal, or The Sims. The Sims is more casual, while Portal offers more puzzle based activities.

My mom was hooked on M&M Heroes III at one point.

Though she was only about 40 at that point, and it was still a bit of a lurning curve for her (and to anyone else completely new to PC gaming, I reckon).

Anyway, turn-based games are your friends, methinks.

You should try Civ 5 - it's turn based, and a lot of it's concepts should be fairly self-explanatory to a grown adult (like taxes and stuff).

I'd start with point & click adventures like Broken sword 1 & 2, Sam and max series, Simon the sorcerer 1 & 2, the Monkey island games. My mum plays these games and so do I because they are brilliant games that are fun and easy to play. She also liked the older Tomb raider games.

Try these:

Puzzle Quest: This is easily the best 'matching' game I've ever played. It has gameplay that is very simple to learn, but can get decently complex. Add on a beautiful art style, well told story, some light RPG mechanics, and you have a winner.

Plants vs. Zombies: My mom digs this one because of how cute it is, and I don't recall it getting hard at all during my playthrough a few years ago.

walking dead. pretty much only need mouse for it. slow pace but fast enough to keep it good and great story

Worked good for My mother and she only plays spades on her computer. So since she enjoy the show I downloaded steam on her PC and let her go at it. She enjoyed it a lot and no you don't need be a walking dead fan to get into the story. It has a whole story line to it self not from the show

I'd say Minecraft. My "aunt-in-law" had no interest in games, but really enjoys the game when her son started playing.

To get her started I would recommend Hidden Object games, Bejeweled, Peggle, and such. Someone mentioned Bigfishgames.com and that would be my suggestion also as a great place to start.

First of all, is your mom looking into gaming for the first time?  Or is this something "YOU" want her to do?

machinarium and botanicula, world of goo, dear esther, Limbo

generally low skill requirement games, dear esther requires no skill at all. The first two are good although machinarium is harder than botanicula.
