Hey guys!  Well I have enough money to make a new computer so I went to Newegg and put together a list of all the parts and stuff I need.  Would someone mind telling me if I am missing any key parts and if this will be a decent rig.  Thx!

Black alluminum mid tower computer case

Wester Digital Scorpio 120gb hard drive, 5400 RPM, 8mb cache

Lite-on 16x DVD drive,48x CD rom drive

Intel Pentium D 3.0Ghz x 2mb L2 cache 775 duel core processor

Nvidia Nforce Professional 2200+2250 3.5 server motherboard

Athena 300w power supply

Geforce 8800GTS 640mb video card

Windows Vista home premium

2gb DDR400 RAM

Samsung 17" LCD Monitor

All this is costing about $1700.  Am I missing any parts or anything?

Your power supply is way below what you'll need. You need at least 450 watts.

Also from personal experience, I'd suggest getting the evga 680i sli motherboard, and a core 2 duo e6300.

You're going to need a better PSU..... Also I'd suggest getting at *least* a 7200RPM HDD w/16MB cache.

OK you need to make sure that your motherboard and ram are compatible. There are S775 MB that take DDR and and some take DDR2 ram. If at all possible I would look at getting a C2D based cpu, E4300 E6300 being the two cheapest, if that is too pricey at least get a motherboard that will accept a C2D in the future, this means a system that uses DDR2 ram. You will need a bigger PSU that is for sure. I really advise you to go read some hardware sites, www.anandtech.com www.tomshardware.com so you have a better understanding about parts general performance and possible upgrade paths for you in the future. http://www.extremetech.com/ has really good articles on building PC's - take a look at the $800 system.

Yes definately go with a Core 2 Duo (E6300 ought to be plenty) and probably 500 or 550w PSU.  I'd definately suggest getting DDR2 RAM PC5300 or 6400 instead of DDR (I believe your 680i won't support DDR if you get it).  A 7200rpm HDD with 16mb cache would be a good idea too, not to mention at least a 19" monitor otherwise you're probably better off sticking with a GeForce 7 series card or the 8500/8600's when they come out.  I'm not sure where to advise you to go since I don't live in the US, but I'm sure people on here will point you in the right direction :)

Don't get a Pentium D... get an E6300 for only a little bit more and you'll be a lot happier later on.

But if you do get the EVGA 680i make sure you get a T1 revision as the earlier model has a small likely hood you'll get a buggy one.

The first thing I noticed is that your getting just a "Black alluminum mid tower computer case." What company? The case is very important to your entire system. If it doesn't cool well enough, then your system is going to fry. A case is not something I would ever think of skimping on. Get a good one, and make sure it has the cooling potential you will need for your system. That 8800 is going to cook. I recommend either Antec, Lian Li, or get one of the Cooler Master CM Stacker series. Thats what I'm using and my system stays cool, even during a lovely Texas summer.

I personally recommend AMD for processors, especially gaming. They run cooler, and typically they run faster game wise. I'm not a big fan of INTEL, although they have some really good motherboards. For intel, Gigabyte has a series of motherboards, the GA-965 series that has really good placement (your PCI-Ex16 slot isn't taking up a PCI slot) for the video card and has enough PCI slots to hold you until someone starts making use of the other PCI-E slots. The other question you have to ask yourself, do you really need SLI? Most gamers don't, and a lot of games really don't support them.

If you want a good primary hard drive, I recommend Hitachi or Seagate. I have never been a big fan of Western Digital. Hitachi makes a nice quiet drive, and Seagate makes the best storage hard drives out there.

As the other said, your PSU is way to low. You will need at least a 450, and with that 8800 I would say no less than a 500 watt. Get a good Antec PSU.

If you are going to get a video card, go after one from BFG. I have 2 of theirs and while I have never had to make use of their life time warranty, its nice to have. Their 24 hour tech support is nice if you can ever get a hold of them. I waited on hold for 4 hours, but they corrected my problem within like 15 minutes.

I would definetly recommend sticking with XP Pro, as I think Vista is questionable at this point and time. I don't like the idea of getting a new OS without a year or two (and a couple patches) under its belt.

If your going to get a gaming monitor, I would recommend the Samsung 19" 940BW. It runs around $200 dollars and they were well worth the price.

With any of the new Motherboards, you are going to be looking at DDR2. I would recommend no less that 2GB's with a good gaming system.

Check out http://www.neoseeker.com for reviews. Other good sites include:

Extremetech is another good choice as well.

I own an 8800GTX, and you're going to need at least a 500 watt psu. Also, the hard drive is a bit slow. You can pick up a Western Digital Cavair 250 gig 300g for less than what you'll probably pay for the one you are suggesting, as well as the speed. It's a 7200 rpm and an SATA drive. It makes all the differerence. It cuts down load and access times quite a bit. Also, as one above said, that 8800 is gonna cook. I had to add a PCI graphics cooler and two case fans. Doesn't take long for the 8800 to reach 70 celcius, and I already had two case fans and a scoop to draw out the heat.

PC looks like crap.  For one, nothing in it is really compatible.  A server motherboard? 5400 RPM HDD?  Pentium D?  How does this come to $1700?

First off,

500 watt psu ~100

E6600 ~310

8800GTS (will go obsolete around the time a GTX, so save the money) ~350

250 - 300 GB 7200 RPM ~80

Gigabyte DS3 ~120

2GB of DDR2 800 ~200

Any ATX Case ~75 (No need to go higher)

17" LCD ~200

The E6600 has a higher multiplier, (and 4MB cache) so when you overclock you dont need amazing ram, hence the DDR2 800, the DS3 has good overclocking ability, and doesn't cost a lot.  Only one PCI-E slot, but you won't be going SLI anyways, so it doesn't matter.  a 500 watt psu will be plenty to power everything.

Figures out to ~1435.
