I'm old gamer, but lately can't find anything to play!Better graphics took away good story and attractive game play.

All new games - go kill like robot till your brains boiled up. Just look around - ALL games about distraction, killing, blow up, fight non-stop.......

I imagine kids and teens playing this games for years and years - (game developers ask your self a question- what they learn? what they will use too? what skills they will have? -I guess nobody give a damn, they develop probably what sells best and fast-did I get it right?)

You will say - it's FUN. Is it the only type of fun left- go WAR and kill like a robot? Somehow not for me...

I'm looking around for a while and waiting - but I don't see anything different coming up.

I was actually enjoying more to play old games like Pharaoh, Zeus, Civilization (2-3)etc, but there nothing even close between new games can be found.

I also use to play RPGs (Baldurs gate, Dungeon siege etc.) and lately online MMO RPGs (lineage 2, guild wars etc), but I get bored of non-sense leveling and chronicle "money" deficiency - my impression this games build so unemployed teems in Asia can make money selling "game money" for real $$. Because this is what's happening and there absolutelly no way around.

And again - is something new coming out? I don't see anything like that. (I mean Fantasy RPGs)

I don't want to kill like robot and go war and destroy- I could kill ugly monsters, but it's actually kind of boring too if there no another sense in the game. So I would play probably some beautiful fantasy RPG game with some good story.

But what I'm really looking forward - some "build" strategy game that can take away me for hours...

Any suggestions?

I tried the settlers rise of an empire demo and it seemed good. I remember Pharaoh, just played it a few months ago and it is still great even though im not that good at it, but yeah, settlers gave me a kind of pharaoh feel. I don't know what else to recommend, I do agree with you about the FPS stuff, although im playing bioshock resently and it is cool with the upgrading and plasmids are a new take on a strategy, I don't think they are just like magic because they do so many other things. So I guess what im saying is if a good non-robot like shooting FPS is of interest then look up bioshock!

I agree, 100%. Couldn't have said it better myself. I've always wanted to see a cel-shaded anime-ish MMORPG, but "done right".

If you want a good RTS that involves empire building I'd suggest Total War series. I liked RomeTotal War more then Medieval Total War2, and its also a lot cheaper. As for more standard Aoe and warcraft style RTS there is warhammer40k, CnC3, CoH and WiC to name a few.

Good RPG? No recent ones come to mind. NWN2 and the expansion might be good, but I really didn't like NWN much, although I loved the BG series. I may end up giving it a chance just because I haven't played a good RPG in ages. Deus Ex and Vampires bloodlines (need community patches for it do be good) are cool RPG/FPS that I'd recommend if you haven't played them yet. Kotor (as much as I'm not a star wars fan, it was quite good), Gothic series is decent, and Elder Scrolls are worth a try. I'm not too well versed in sci fi RPG's though.

Please don't do any more silly rants like that, not all new games are mindless just because they have good graphics. And I never learned anything from classic games like Fallout, they were just fun. I find the recently released Orange Box a very refreshing FPS experience compared to most. Bioshock seems like a lot of fun too, I ended up playing a couple hours of it at a friends, and will probably end up buying it once it becomes cheaper. Stalkers looks like a nice FPS as well. I really do miss good RPGs, I'm praying Fallout 3 is fantastic.

Portal. Plain and simple fun, no shooting of any kind...you might "kill" a few sentry guns and a supercomputer, but thats it.

You may not want The orange Box, but it sounds like you would enjoy Portal.

Is your gaming platform limited to the PC?

That's your biggest obstacle. There are tons of non-shooter, non-apocalyptic, non-fedex quest games out there, but lately and sadly(? I'm not one to dwell in the past and I think gaming at large is still fantastic) the PC specializes in them. Shooters seem to be taking to the high point in gaming for this era, similar to how platformers were to the early 90's on consoles--if memory serves me right. I'm lazy and tired atm to list them but I'm certain you can find "salvation" for your hobby even if it means importing a wonky game from Japan for your PS2.

I completely agree. If you find a good RPG, let me know. I'd like to find one that not onlylooks great, but has widescreen support.

shooter games arent mindless: they actually provoke emotions out of you: owning someone online makes you feel awesome that someone somewhere isnt as good as you at something ;P

but seriously although you might not be into fps games that doesnt mean other people arent- its the number one bought genre of game. if they got bad- wouldnt you notice it? and dont say that they just did it so slowly that nobody noticed- plenty of games get bashed because of a crappy story. in fact its one of the markers you get on gamespot reviews- if the story is incredible or make you want to go see star wars 1-2 it will be marked on it.

and plus- most empire games do involve "mindless killing" look at your empire/ rts games: its called a random map- you against a computer for a bout of "mindless killing" until one city is destroyed and the other isnt...

Ever since Square And Enix merged things have been going down hill for rpgs for me. FFX was one of my fav games that as came out in the 21st centry, FFXII was way to big with too much to do most of the time and i didn't enjoy it nor beat it. Before that my fav wa FFIII (US). It had a good story and really enjoyed it. I've abandoned the sony platform now and picked up a 360. I'm kinda hoping Mass Effect does well. Everything is blood and guts with no real great story. I'd love a chance to direct and create a game for everyone. I think i could make something we are all missing out on these days.

Cute fantasy... Pfft.

Asians seem to be making alot of that crap in form of MMO, go grind that.

For the people who dislike cute happy rpgs, then like me you should be waiting for...

Assassins Creed, The Witcher, Spore, Crysis and Empire Earth 3.

These few games look to be the 'decent' releases of 2007 and early 2008. So if your looking for something with BOTH good graphics and great gameplay these are some of the most likely candidates for now :p.

Then there are MMOGs, which is another genre altogether.

Go download snes roms for sword of mana or something if you want cute and fantasy! I did, about 6 years ago...

If you're looking for empire building: Civilization IV, Alpha Centauri (an absolute gem even though it's slightly older), Galactic Civilization II (best strategy AI ever)

In terms of RPG I agree that developers tend to stick way too much to the typical formulas (Diablo, Hero Quest) just with different graphics.

Whilethese aredefinitely not RPG's and not really empire building either (unless you're talking about economic empires), from your rant it looks like you might perhaps enjoy some of the transport / business simulators out there? Transport Tycoon Deluxe, Capitalism 2, ...

Virtual Villagers 2: The Lost children.

It's an Indie game, but that doesn't mean it is of low quality. It's more of a management/strategy game. Try the trial version to see if you like it or not.

I agree completely. These are all great games, and most all of the Tycoon games are just great. They never get old really, though you may need to take a break from them every once in awhile to revive that freshness about them. Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 and the original have seen many hours of gaming from me. I don't see them ever getting old, and there is always a new way to build something on them, you just have to think it up. It's great how building the same exact park with rides and spectacles at different locations will make a park do that much better in sales and what not, you just have to figure out which way that is, and continue trying to beat your old record sales.

I agree with you buddy, games that come out today are far to simplistic and easy. I started gaming with Everquest and while it was by no means totally oldschool, it was the most indepth and long lasting game that has giving me some of the best memories.
