How is the population these days other than mods..how many people still play the regular game?

Hmm about 60,000-80,000 at any time. Probably 2/3 of those are playing DOTA and other custom maps. Takes around 40s to find a match at low level.

Yea 60k is average. Take away the DOTA and its like4 or 5 people? dota = horrible.

Its crazy companies like blizzard and valve have huge communities years after release..it puts a smile on my happy face!

Agreed. If you like overrated custom maps like DOTA - then you'll be in heaven. Otherwise - that's it. Don't get me wrong though, it's fun at first considering its unique gameplay, but it gets old really quick. I'm really surprised how seriously people take the game.

Yeah, as said above it can be a fun game but DOTA regulars are probably the biggest snobs in all of online gaming. They don't like it if you aren't an expert.

I hate their attitudes, but it's understandable. I stopped playing a long time ago, but back then there was this "official" dota clan that hosted serious games. It was even worse than pub games in terms of attitude problems, but at least ppl usually stay til the end. I also remember there were these automated banlists for people that left in the middle, i wonder if they're still being ridiculously abused today. The best way to play this game is with friends imo, be it regular or DOTA.
