I ordered the retail version of Hitman Absolution for the PC today, mainly because I enjoyed the previous Hitman games a lot, and also because the Metacritic score was 78. But now I'm seeing several people say that the save system is so badly flawed that its almost impossible to complete the game. Is this true? If so, I'll return the game and claim a refund.

It makes it more challenging, which is good but sometimes frustrating. Playing the game on the hardest difficulty is absolutely hard. I had to lower difficulty from Hard to Normal but I might play it on Purist on the next playthrough.

The only problems i have with the game are the camera angles are sometimes really close to the player in cetrain areas and the checkpoint system is a bit naf. I havent gotten far enough into the game to know weather the checkpoint system is game breaking but i cant see any reason why it would be. Other than that it feels like i am playing another Hitman game, which being a fan of the other Hitman games is is why I bought it.

People talk out of their ass a lot. The game can be completed without using any midlevel checkpoints at all. With checkpoints it's a breeze. I played through on Expert first without checkpoints and now I'm doing a normal playthrough to do all the challenges, and it's easy as pie. Plenty of checkpoints. Although some say that the checkpoint system is glitched, that the position gets saved but your progress isn't, meaning some guards you took out are respawned. Can't confirm this.

The disguise system is much harder than the older Hitman games though, and gets really frustrating on the harder difficulties. Enemies just see through your disguise too quickly, i.e. if you're 20 meters away facing away from them while wearing a full disguise incl. mask, they get suspicious in 5 seconds unless you use the blend in function which depletes instincts...

This requires you to play more stealthy, look out more for enemies, be more careful in general.

Don't get me wrong, I really liked Hitman Absolution. It's lengthy, challenging and has great presentation and graphics and there are enough good oldschool Hitman levels to make this a worthy Hitman game.

You'll have to see for yourself if you like it. Don't write it off just because some people complained about it. There are always critics, and they'll always be more vocal than the people that liked it.

Turns out you're right about the checkpoint system being glitched. My friend is playing the game. Like you said, the checkpoints save only your position and not your progress, but not always. Like if you've killed a target as part of the mission, the progress is saved. But if you've killed others, then they automatically respawn when you load the checkpoint. This means the checkpoints serve no purpose whatsoever. Will this be patched?

checkpoints are useful when you progress through areas and there is no reason to go back from whence you came. I doubt it will be fixed because it's by design. If you get stuck in a checkpoint, just restart the mission - they aren't that long.

Its not impossible to finish the game, its just whether you can be bothered. It can be very tedious and testing to play through some long patches without a checkpoint. Since you're a fan of the series it'll be interesting to see what you think of the game, so post your thoughts on it here once you start playing!

One thing I did hate was how if I killed a guy moved past him the "Checkpointed" and reloaded he would be alive and it would be impossible to pass him without either killing him or setting people off.

Not impossible to finish the game at all. Also 78%, 80% and 83% are not bad averages at all. Since when are those bad average scores? Some like the game, some love it, some hate it. I like it personally, its beautiful, has good gameplay, Improved UI, good controls and to me it feels like the hitman series I love. Sure there is somethings I miss from the previous games but this new Hitman is still a good game imo. The issues I have are balance issues with the discuise system on harder difficulties and that there is no loadout ability for campaign missions like in previous games. Try the game and see how you like it, I agree most with the Giantbomb review, 80%.

^^ This

I'm playing through on Professional Hard and not using any midlevel checkpoints and it's really good fun. Most maps are small enough not to need checkpoints, and needing to load a checkpoint suggests you either died or did something wrong. Every map is possible to play and complete without the use of additional checkpoints as the harder the difficulty the less they let you use them, to the point of not having them at all.

If you've played previous Hitman games then skip the 2 easy settings and jump straight in to Professional. Play stealthily and watch the movement of the guards and targets and it will be a good fun challenge. Purist is also good fun, but really there for when you know the level and the movements of your targets well.

There is far too much whining on the forums about the checkpoints which is totally unneccessary

Do you reckon someone will mod the ini file and change the FOV? Hopefully it isn't locked down pat.. I prefer Blood Money camera angle but I guess the new camera suits that cover system better. Eh.

Checkpoint system is flawed, but the autosave is fine. The game autosaves between certain areas of the map. It's really easy to complete even without the checkpoint system; I only used one, maybe two checkpoints throughout the entire game.

The save system is one of the smaller problems this game has.

It's more similar to SC: Conviction than previous Hitman games and if you expect Blood Money 2, return the game right now.

The checkpoint system didn't really bother me since most levels are quite compact and the game autosaves between levels. But I really wished they gave us save slots like in previous hitman games.

I'm done with a couple of missions. As of now, I feel this game is much more accessible (not necessarily easier) than the previous Hitman games, yet still is definitely a Hitman game at the core. Really liking it. As for the checkpoints, until now I haven't used them much, because I'm finding that autosaves between various parts of a level are sufficient. Don't know if this situation changes later on. I want to beat the game this weekend, 'cos I ually game for around 12 hours a day on weekends (both saturday and sunday) unless I have other important stuff.

Anyone have any comments on the instinct system? From third hand information, it sounds really dumb.

78 is a damn, damn, damn good score. Don't think of it as an American grading system (A, B, C, D, F), its not like that.

As for the save system, think of it as an added challenge :P

This game has problems...AI inconsistent, bad camera angel (it's too close so you cant see a lot of the enviroment and people around you). some glitches here and there and the levels are way too short to complete.
