I think it was created back in the multiplayer days of Quake (the original) when people found the need to have easier access to more buttons for switching weapons etc. Over the years it became such a common practise for people to configure their movement controls to WASD that it became a standard configuration/option in most fps games.

WASD is actually used to overcome hardware limitations of the keyboard. Try doing different combinations of up/down/left/right + spacebar and you'll see why.farrell2k
huh? ESDF, among other combinations, works just fine and has been used in plenty of games.

It has? I've never seen a game with that default key mapping.

Normally in most games , "E" is a default for action, "F" is used for flashlight and your fingers will be further from LEFT CTRL, which in most games is Crouch :)

Nowadays, yes most games use WASD mostly for the user frienliness and because WASD has become very mainstream. I remember playing old games with the inverted T-movement shifted to the right, or left&right and up&down being in two separate locations. Some fps players still use ESDF or something shifted even more to the right, since it allows your pinky finger to access a lot more buttons without having to lift off the movement controls.

Anyways my point was that WASD isn't used because of hardware limitations but because this has become the norm, similar to how we use the QWERTY keyboard for no reason other than some guy made it popular.

i don't know who came up with that idea, but hey. it works pretty well actually. i just don't like having to hold a button to walk as opposed to lightly moving a joystick or something. you can't really lightly hold a key down, but the whole thing works.

I haven't seen it in many games, but I do remember Tribes 2 using that as the default mapping.

ESDF is actually the better movement scheme for pvp-heavy MMORPGs, simply because it gives you access to more keys for keymapping with your left hand.

WASD was actually invented by Robert L. Wasd in River Bend, Indiana, ca. 1908. While tinkering in his garage workshop one Sunday afternoon after services at the local Methodist church, Bob accidentally invented the personal computer, computer keyboard, mouse, monitor, and 3D video game. While testing his new discoveries, he found the most comfortable and effective key combination for video gaming, the keys of which have since been named in his honor. Further details can be found at the Personal Computing Hall of Fame located in Cooperstown, Rhode Island.
