I liked Rome the most, because it was the first one I played. It was a blast recreating the Gladiator battle against the horde and reliving the Roman glory days. I know it wasn't historical, but I loved it anyways.
Rome, mostly because of the ultra awesome era, but the game was SOOOO well made back in 2004 - it still is, but now the graphics are starting to suffer (allthou you can get some pretty decent graphic mod's).
The new Shogun II is pretty good as well, allthou I was more happy gaming rome in 2004 than I am playing Shogun II in 2011.
The best is Empire total war, for me it had the most fun and gameplay. Second is Shogun 2 which is great but lacks some of the things that was in Empire and for me it was just a rewamped Shogun total war.
well you cant go wrong. ignore shogun 1 and medieval 1 as their successors are better. they were great at the time but getting them now is pointless. my fav is rome. the era and tactics of the time were very cool imho. i also liked empire. the sea battels didnt really work but the land battles were very different from other TW games. it was also absolutely massive...maybe a bit too big :P. but really you cant go wrong. pic a game from an era your interested in maybe. there all great.
Rome was the best game in the series. For the time, it was an astounding visual feat to have so many soldiers rendered on screen at once. The original Medieval was quite good, too. Here's how I rank them:
1. Rome
2. Medieval
3. Medieval 2
4. Napoleon
5. Shogun 2
6. Empire
All were very enjoyable nonetheless, though. And I never played the original Shogun, so...
