i would like to do this without using a video recorder, just something on my pc to record the gameplay, does anyone know of any?

he used a console command "record " and opened it by saying "showdemo newguy" all in the console, but he says his not sure how to make it into a video file

This guide is applicable to pretty much every Source-engine powered game, including Left4Dead. There should be a means of taking a recorded .dem file and exporting it as AVI. The benefit in doing that is having the game record what's going on will barely disrupt your frame-rate, versus say, having FRAPS running and crunching at your harddrive.

You do not have to purchase FRAPS, as there is a free version avalible. FRAPS automatically saves as .avi but I recommend moving the video files to an external harddrive when you're done because the files can be HUGE.

I think the free version records only 30-sec videos.

Another reason to get Xfire, you can record way more...

The record feature in Source games records gameplay for you to replay later. Then you can control the camera and make movies.

There's no need for a third party program with Source games as Source has it all built-in.

You can record a 1hr+ match for only around 128mb and you can play it back later for the actual recording and you can move your camera around for better view then you have before, Plus you can convert the video in Source to AVI (the avi will be big in size depending on your video).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPzqgaZwJVY, this tutorial is just a simple one, Google more if you want a more advanced one.

Use something like VDub; Vegas; Etc. for a Video Editing software.

Here's a short video I made in TF2 using the Source Recorder [Link], the quality isn't the best for this video but that's just because I took the fast easy way out, as this is just a short showcase.

Source recorder also works in Muitlplayer ands its great if you want that Epic Sceenshot but not go out of your way just to get it when playing a match.

If you don't have a Video Editing Software I recommend VirtualDub it might not be as good as the Priced editors but Vdub does its job well for open source Software (Free).

If I did the proper Resizing; Compression the video would come out Allot better, I however was lazy and let Photobucket do it (Fast; Easy & Crappy)...:P
