So basically, my 320gb WD Hard Drive crapped out on me. It is the My Book Essential Edition. I plug it in, it makes a whirring/tiny beep like 5 times in a row and does not show up in my computer or device manager. Anyone know how I may be able to save my data or anything like that? It is out of warranty and WD support sucks anyways, so any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

If it doesn't spin up it's probably died and it very expensive to get the data off it. you could tr taking the drive out of the case and plugging it into you computer with a sata cable and see if it works.

Well unless you can afford a data recovery service then you are probably not going to get your data off there, well at least not easily anyway. Hopefully you don't have any important data on it. Hey try seeing if you can get the drive to work long enough in order to create a backup image of your files.

Same thing happened to me and its not life threatening except fo my mom's trust - that might die. All I got in it are movies. How would I do what you said?

I have a 320,000,000,000 Byte (about 298 GiB) SmpleTech i don't know what it is.

unscrew the case, take the hdd out, open you computer (making sure it is off and unplugged) get a sata cable, plug one end into the motherboard and the other end into the hdd, find a spare sata power connector into the hdd plug it in and see if it works.

there are probably some rubber feet covering the screws if you can't see them. There should be some sort of screws somewhere holding the case closed.
