My computer just recently developed a weird hang during the start up process. After all the loading screens , when the desktop just appears, the computer would start a few processes, for example 17, then stop everything for about 3-4 minutes.During the hang the mouse functions normally. I can open any program, but the program never loads so the screen stays blank. After this it would start the rest of the processes and function normally. Theres no difference in performance, just this weird hang. Ive even run a virus/spyware/trojan/adware scan. Can someone help me?

Try disabling all start up items.

Press Start, then Run, Type in "Msconfig" without quotations, then click Statup tab and disable everything. When it asks you to restart do so, and then report back here if it still hangs. What it could be is some program giving you BS. Just a possibilty and I'm not definite if this will solve your problem but it's worth a try.

Well go inside your case and check to see if everything is connected right, maybe the power connector or sata cable to your HDD is loose, or maybe your ram isn't in right. Check.

I checked absolutely every cable/component in the computer. everything is connected properly. Nothing is overclocked, the only thing i can be suspicious about is the HDD making the thrashing noises.

Try a 4 pin power connector for your HDD instead of the SATA, that happend to me once. It would lock up in beginning sometimes when I used SATA power connector.

Nope, tried it and it still hangs. But that did stop the HDD thrashing.

Well my second suggestion is to try disconnecting some peripherals from your computer, such and cd-drives, sound cards, etc. Try removing some of your ram. If the problem still persists you could try reformatting and a fresh install of XP.

I've had that happen to me before, the only thing that fixed it was a fresh install of XP, nothing else seemed to work.
