Norton usually carries a 1-year subscription. The initial software is $70, but re-up'ing the subscription is less; like $40 or so for a year. Well worth it. Combined with Lavasoft Ad-Aware 2007, your computer will stay clean as a whistle.
Note: Norton's Firewall can be finicky. Combined with Vista asking for your confirmation etc, it can get really annoying sometimes. However depending on your computer habits, it can be a small price to pay for security/safety.

I read an article on a security website not long back that tested about 30 or so AntiVirus packages and there was only 2 (if memory serves) that were in the top 5 for Virus and Adware protection and they were Panda and Kaspersky. I personally use Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 which does everything in one, AntiVirus, Adware, Firewall, Email spam filtereven net granny for if you have anyone in the house you don't to access certain websites. I've also had Panda in the past and can say that it is really solid too, either of these two will do you well.
I've noticed that Kaspersky has no impact on my gaming performance though, I did a 3D Mark with Kaspersky running and without and the score was within only a few points. Don't know about Panda though, I haven't used it in a while.
Incidentally, I seem to remember Norton being around 18th for AntiVirus and 16th for Adware and McAfee being about 16th for AntiVirus and 20th for Adware. Not sure if they are the exact placings but I remember them two being rather poor in the listing.
Have fun.
AVG. There's a free-version as well. But, I've heard that some negative stuff about it (games don't run as fast, but thats what I've heard).
Norton Internet Security might be a good solution to your problem then. The biggest setback is that it is a massive system hog, even compared to other anti-viruses. Your system will be clean, but just remember to turn it off before you play heavy gaming or do other system-intensive tasks. It is getting better over time though, still its kinda pointless if you have to keep turning it off.
BTW I use Ashampoo anti-virus. I got a free 100 day special from some competition and I don't feel like renewing Norton right now. It uses less resources, but the system scans take epic times to finish and it's not that reliable at removing malware. It's $30.00 US to buy. Not sure how much it is to renew.
Kaspersky is ok, but horribly over-priced. Bitdefender is cheaper and is overall better. It's definately not lacking in features.

This is exactly what I would suggest. I've been using Norton for YEARS, and it has always served me well. It's a MILLION times better than McAfee (and AVG)... It doesn't bring up an annoying window every time you start you computer, only to update its definitions and have you restart again (like AVG. I HATE IT!). Combined with Lavasoft Ad-Aware, it's a winning combo.
Panda, AVG, Avast - they're all good Antivirus programs etc, but one of the reasons they get rated so high is because they all have free versions. People like free. Norton, McAfee get rated lower by younger consumers because they're NOT free, however provide as good and better quality service and protection than their 'free' competitors.
On my 2 primary computers, I use Norton. I have a 3rd computer in the house with AVG on it, and I have a laptop for the kids with Avast. Then again, they don't "surf" the web and torrent like I do either.
In the end, it depends on your personal use/style. If you "need" the protection(wink wink), you're better off with a retail Antivirus like Norton or McAfee. If not, a free program can do just fine.
NOD32 and Kaspersky are the market leaders. If you don't want to pay then get Avast.
Norton is a horrible bloated mess.

yeah i think ill get kaspersky..i had norton for 60 days and it was some heavy "thing" :P i wont get nod32 coz i have seen a live demonstration by my friend regarding"obliteratiing nod32" with a "thing"
I would suggest using Kaspersky, just the Antivirus package alone. I have had nothing but good thing go on with it since 6.0 and now 7.0. It has a small footprint, I have found it to be highly accurate, low onresource usage, and works perfectlyon Vista 32 and 64 bit. In my case I got both my versions of Kaspersky each free after rebate through CompUSA.
