sounds kinda cliche, but give civ 4 a try it's a great game. Another one that is really really good is Galactic Civilizations 2...It's similar to Civ, but in space and you get to design your own ships and everything. It's an incredible game.

  • Civilization 4 Gold (also get the Beyond the Sword expansion)
  • Civilization 4: Colonization
  • Galactic Civilization 2 Ultimate Pack

Those are the three that will be most similar to the Civ 3 experience. Now, for other TBS games that venture away from the Civ formula:

  • Disciples 2 Gold
  • Age of Wonder 2
  • Fallout Tactics
  • Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord
  • Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin
  • Laser Squad: Nemesis
  • Worms: Armageddon

I also recommend GalCiv2 and Civ4, by now you can prolly get some sort of complete editions from both with the expansions. Colonization is a separate game despite having Civ4 in the title. Heroes Of Might an Magic is okay, 3rd was great, 4th and 5th not quite so but still good. And even tho when most people talk about Total War they talk about the real-time combat part, there's also a fairly decent TBS part to the game that takes place on the world map similar to Civ.

I highly suggest trying Rise of Nations.

The campaign has features very similar to the Civ games, from what I've heard, but it's mainly RTS.

Look it up, it's a sort of Civ-Age of Empires hybrid.

Oh yeah, there's also the Heroes Of Might & Magic series.

I'd say number 3 is the best. Top notch gameplay.

Silent Storm Gold is my favorite game. It's different from the CIV games, but is still great TBS fun. Highly recommended. I love the CIV series too.

I just got, Empire total war and its quite good. Its an execlent mix of RTS and Turn based, meny Total wars are (give shogun a try too). Also try Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV. It came out recently and I like it, its only like $20 on the low!!!

if you like civ i would recomend one of the total war games. But that is only if you like controlling your armies on the battlefield.
