I really like the old nintendo games like Illusion of Gaia ,Zelda , soul blazer and secret of mana so on.. Anyone know of any games like this for the computer ? Is it even possible or do I need a game consoles?

What about Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim ? I know Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is 3D and realistic graphics where those old games from 90's are 2D and crude graphics but both are open world and fighting thus theme is same or not????

I would suggest trying the demo before buying the game. The Elder Scrolls doesn't really play like Zelda at all, it is it's own thing, and very awesome, but different. Dark Souls is closer to what you're looking for, but again try the demo first, or watch some youtube vids.

Most of those games had a lot of fighting and fighting evil spirits ,creatures ,monsters , demons ,demonic creatures and snakes other creatures so on. Not sure if Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is base on that or have that.

I'll be entirely honest, if you're a big fan of Zelda, get the tiny Wii for US$99,99 and get Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword and all the older ones on the virtual console. If it can be any RPG in general, I'd suggest you try Dark Souls, The Witcher 2 and Kingdoms of Amalur - they aren't similar to the games you mentioned, but they're great games in their own merit.

going by what you said you liked, skyrim is not something you'd like :P it's much more "random nameless guy kills stuff and does quests with shallow combat and huge world", and not so much "great story and dungeon crawling with cool combat".

darksiders and its sequel are no brainers, since you like zelda and illusion of gaia. you might also like the Ys games, since they're fast paced action RPGs (like secret of mana).

you may or may not enjoy the witcher games. the narrative is the strongest point in those games (some of the best gaming has to offer), but the gameplay itself falls short.

you also may or may not enjoy dark souls. it's an amazing RPG, and the world is structured similar to metroid games. if you've never played a metroid game, think of zelda, but you spend the entire game inside one huge dungeon. the game is really punishing at first though, it takes a while to get used to how the game plays.

What I'm concern about Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim looking at some youtube videos it looks more like strategy game than action combat not much fighting on the level like those games. Other thing about Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is I don't think you fighting things like evil spirits ,creatures ,monsters , demons ,demonic creatures and snakes other creatures . Looking at the youtube video clips it has some element feel like open world , going to village and talking to people , finding treasure use of coins ( money ) ,buy and sale stuff ,magic ,healing , spells ,sword, shield, spear, bow, axe, boomerang, glove, whip, boots , shoes , other armor so on.Finding treasure and items so on. But the combat and fighting looks different and I don't see things like evil spirits ,creatures ,monsters , demons ,demonic creatures so on. But than again I only looked at some of the youtube clips.

Well I was looking at some of the screenshots of Bioware's Neverwinter Night ,dark souls , Divine Divinity look more closer to those games I like . Not sure if Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim yet . The action ,combat and fighting and bosses in Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is what looks strange not on the level like those games but than again I only seen some youtube clips of it.

Note I was reading that dark souls is very hard game to play even for people really good at playing games.

you won't find those things you mentioned in skyrim. for that matter, if combat is important to you, stay away from skyrim. it's terrible, even the fans of the game know that. also skyrim doesn't really have "bosses". the closest to that are the dragons, and even then, they're not very boss-like.

on the other hand, dark souls sounds like the kind of game you'd like. it has amazing creature design, memorable bosses, and one of the best combat systems in any action RPG.

You could try any of the three Gothic games (stay away from the 4th game - Arcania, as far as possible, it's downright horrible) All of them are open world, action orriented and are pretty challanging (especially the first 2 games). The first game has a terrific story and atmosphere. Graphically, it doesn't look good by today's standards. The second game is very much like the first one but it has a lot more content (quests, locations, characters, crafting and stuff to do). The story is a bit generic and you'll be confused at the beginning if you havent played the previous game. The third game features the biggest open world in the series. You can go to any location in the world from the start. There's plenty of combat in this one and magic/spells gameplay is also the most robbust. Graphically, it looks gorgeous. Storywise it's not as good as the other two games.

LOL. Wat ??

Skyrim is action combat. It's just s****y action combat. Just get Dark Souls and play it with a controller. Or Gothic 1/2, System Shock 2 & Deus Ex (original) are great action games with RPG elements too.

As someone who dislikes almost all open-world type RPGs I have to say I really enjoyed Skyrim. I got about 70 hours out of it which is a pretty good value. Deus Ex: HR was also really good IMO. Also all the Mass Effect games are great and they just released the full Trilogy in one box so I would really recommend that as well. Borderlands 2 if you want more of a hybrid FPS with RPG mechanics.

Diablo 3 is more of an "action RPG". personally I have been gaming for a couple decades and never really gotten into Diablo (not a big fan of A-B games in general). Personally I think Torchlight 2 would be more fun if you like action RPGs, but only if you have other people to play co-op with. *best Peter Griffin voice* Ah I'm sorry I'm already drunk...

diablo is pretty linearly structured, but yeah, at its core, it's all about getting better loot and leveling up through multiple replays on multiple difficulties. the levels are somewhat randomly structured, and there are "random events" that might happen too. there isn't much in terms of sidequesting, it's pretty much fight through the main quest while leveling up, selling weak loot and keeping the good stuff. think it has a free trial that you can check out to see if you like.

skyrim's combat is awful. that's probably why you don't see much of it on youtube. dark souls' difficulty is a bit overrated. it takes some getting used to, and yes, you will die. but that doesn't mean the game is super hard or cheap. it's just challenging. apparently nowadays any game that is actually challenging enough that you'll die at least once while playing is "OMG SO HARD". it's not. if anything, dark souls is rather forgiving, with close checkpoints and the currency (souls) being easily reobtainable if you lose them. i still think you ought to check out Ys: Oath in Felghana, especially considering how cheap it is (even cheaper if you wait for steam's christmas sale)

Dark Souls isn't hard, you just can't go in there button mashing and actually have to block and fight a little defensivly. (which is a good thing) Get it, it sounds like that would be the perfect game for you. Just use a controller.

As far as Diablo/Torchlight type games, even though they are called ARPGs, they have point and click gameplay which prob isn't what you're looking for. I'd actually recommend other ARPGs l(I like to call them loot whoring games) like Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance/Champions of Norrath as theyre more actiony and involve more player skill. (analog movement, manual blocking...) The only thing is they're on consoles, so you have to try and use emulation if you don't have the consoles to play them on. Maybe look into Dungeon Seige 3 ?

NWN games aren't what you're looking for, as it's not an action style RPG & has point & click gameplay too. Divine Divinity I never played, but heard it had Diablo type gameplay, but more like Ultima, say. Not just the constant loot whoring/hacking & slashing. More dialog, story elements and exploration, I guess. But again, if the gameplay is point & click like Diablo, it's prob not what you're looking for either, as it sounds like you want a more interactive action style RPG. That's why I recommended Dark Souls, Gothic games (avoid 4 & patch 3) , System Shock 2 and Deus Ex.

I would def avoid Skyrim though if you're looking for decent combat, as the games main strength is pretty open world enviorments & the exploration. Story elements are also very sub-par.

What do you mean by point & click games . That you click there and you don't fight the guy it does it sort like final fantasy turn base ?

Not turn based. It's real time, but you click on the ground to move there instead of manually moving your character around, you click on an enemy and your character 'auto attacks'... Get it ?

you click on the enemies and your character attacks the enemy. basically the entire game is controlled with the mouse, although it is real time. the whole diablo franchise is like this.

I still have two questions about Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

1.Base on some of the youtube clips ( I have not seen ) does Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim have evil spirits ,creatures ,monsters , demons ,demonic creatures so on in the game or later on in the game?

Why the big hype about Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim than? One of the top games now people are talking about.

People are graphics whores and it's relatively new

They love open world games where they can just wander around aimlessly

It's very casualised compared to alot of RPGs (especially older ones) Which means it appeals to more ppl than just the hardcore RPG players

As far as your other question, the monster variety is very weak in Skyrim. Especially for a big fantasy RPG.

And the dungeon design is increadibly linear too. http://rampantgames.com/blog/?p=3813

We already touched on the combat being lame

The 'story' elements (writing, characters, dialogs, choices and consequences) are not good at all (although the lore you can read in books isn't bad)

Skyrim is just a TERRIBLY overrated game for all the hype it gets.

1- i don't know why you want so badly to fight these enemies, but for the most part, no. it's mostly fantasy animals and humans of various kinds. 2- skyrim is just a really, really big game with a lot of emphasis on quantity (over 300 hours of gameplay!), and not enough on quality (of doing the same pointless stuff and going through the same exact places that have been copypasted throughout the land). the reason people are impressed by it is that quantity, even if it's not particularly fun or engaging.

How about the Darksiders games. They have some exploring, they have the fighting, they have the progression, some platforming. Maybe they could fit your taste.

Like the poster above said, get Darksiders. Nox has pretty good combat, but that might not be the kind of game you are looking for, as it is heavily mouse driven. Speaking of Skyrim, I made a post in another thread explaining how I felt about it.

Skyrim is quite a good game... assuming you

  • Don't dabble in Alchemy, Enchanting and especially smithing.
  • Ignore the horrid combat
  • Ignore the lifeless, repetitive scenery
  • Ignore the quests which are worse than those in your average mmo
  • Ignore the awful writing
  • Ignore the obvious level scaling
  • Ignore the worst implementation of a perk system EVER!
  • Ignore the overly underwhelming dragons
  • Ignore the lack of depth
  • Ignore the lack of challenge
  • Ignore the lack of variety
  • Ignore the terrible magic system
  • Ignore the idiotic level up system where you can gain 3 levels or so not even pressing any of the WASD keys once.
  • Ignore the bugs
  • Ignore the awful textures
  • Ignore the voice acting
  • Ignore the random/unneeded comments guards spew out 24/7

Maroxad

Here it is.

I would def avoid Skyrim though if you're looking for decent combat, as the games main strength is pretty open world enviorments & the exploration.

bussinrounds

Even the open world elements are really poor. The world is terribly repetitive (mountains, forests, mountains, forests... and a swamp) and lifeless. And exploration is pointless thanks to the godawful implementation of smithing and level scaling.

There is no particulary good reason to explore and the world is only slightly less static as the one in WoW.

You know what ? I don't doubt that and probably would of realized it if I stuck around long enough to find out.

Another problem with the exploration and quests is that it just leads to the crappy combat anyway. (which the game revolves around, unless picking flowers or rearranging crap in your house excites you. LOL)

I could see it being better if they had other mechanics in place, like doing archaeology when exploring, being able to complete quest in different ways, besides just go here...kill this... Really having to search to find rare and interesting items. But then Beth would have to be able to make them useful in some meaningful way, which we know is WAY too much to ask for from them.

But then Beth would have to be able to make them useful in some meaningful or interesting way, which we know is WAY too much to ask from them.

If you haven't yet, go to your local comic store and ask them when their next Dungeons and Dragons campaign will be. If you want to play a "real" RPG game, nothing can beat good ol' Pencil and Paper role playing games.

I agree, but that's something best enjoyed with friends/ppl you know. Playing with complete random strangers seems a bit weird to me.

They're only strangers the first play session. You'll feel like you've known them your whole life after the first couple hours.

[QUOTE="Temesra"]

[QUOTE="kidcool189"] Ys Oath in Felghana and Ys Origin should be top considerations based on this. Bastion a good choice too.

2.The makers of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim what path did they take with Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim what where they trying to do different than those games?

Why the big hype about Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim than? One of the top games now people are talking about.

1- i don't know why you want so badly to fight these enemies, but for the most part, no. it's mostly fantasy animals and humans of various kinds.

Well because if Scrolls V: Skyrim had that and lots more finding and going through sorta like mazes like areas and dungeons it would be like those games but only thing change is the graphics .

Those games where base heavy on fantasy and medieval like weapons and body armor that Scrolls V: Skyrim has the amount of fighting , exploration and encounters of mutants , folklore creatures, evil spirits ,creatures ,monsters , demons ,demonic creatures so on Scrolls V: Skyrim does not have this for some reason .

Now if Scrolls V: Skyrim have all that than all has change is the graphics.

You see the amount of fighting and monster and evil spirits ,creatures ,monsters , demons ,demonic creatures so on and exploration, finding items and leveling up in those youtube clips below . It just old game and graphics are 2D and crude graphics by today's standard.

Well that is the thing those games where not base on just random animals and people fighting it was base heavy on mutants , folklore creatures, monsters , demons so on.

The problem with a lot of games today is first person shooter and multiplayer games like wow ( World of Warcraft's ) is the fad now. Where fantasy RPG is not big like it was before.

From what I read skyrim is more medieval RPG than the classic medieval fantasy RPG .This may explain the lack of fighting and mutants , folklore creatures, monsters , demons so on.

After 4 years in the suburbs with jack-sh*t to do, I was getting burnt out on gaming. Once I shelved my backlog and just focused on:

a.) Witcher 2 -- 2nd playthru.

b.) Fallout 3 -- re-modded for a new playthrough.

c.) And the numerous class stories of free-to-play Star Wars The Old Republic.

...I started having fun again.

Oh, and look! They are all RPGs just like you asked! (For my PVP fix: I'm playing Gotham City Impostors.)

then don't play skyrim :P the Ys games are really an awesome throwback to old school fantasy RPGs, and dark souls posesses the elements of fantasy you seem to be wanting. though at the end of the day, most of the games i think you'd enjoy the most are long gone from the PC market, and even the console market, and moved onto handhelds.

My top 5 RPG's of all time (in no order) 1: Divine Divinity 2: The Witcher 3: Planescape Torment 4: Bioware's Neverwinter Nights (for the still active community) 5: Dungeon Master on the Atari STZX81plus3

Fantastic list! I would add KOTOR2 and Gothic2 to that list also.

Two Worlds 2 is a very mediocre game. Here's a decent eview of it.

http://www.gamebanshee.com/reviews/108977-two-worlds-ii-review.html

Since you're looking for a good fantasy RPG with decent action gameplay, I would focus on...

Dark Souls (don't play with a keyboard & mouse)

Gothic 2

Witcher 2 to a lesser degree (a little too much rolling combat wise, has some decent 'story' elements though)

two worlds 2 is bad. the witcher 2 is actually about monster hunting, and if you go after the sidequests, you'll find plenty of situations where you fight (or not, depending on how things go) mystical creatures like trolls and ghosts. the main story though is centered about a conflict between humans and elves and as such, you don't spend nearly enough time doing stuff a witcher is supposed to do (which is monster slaying). there are more than a few sidequests though.
