I see from your sig you already have W:ET, which in my opinion, is easily one of the best free PC games out there. You could try out FEAR Combat or America's Army for other online FPS. You should also check out this site for abandonware DOS games.
Isn't Carmack releasing some free, ad-driven version of Quake?
Oh, and head to 3D realm's website, they have lots of old shareware games for free download, like Commander Keen, Shadow Warrior, Duke Nukem 1, 2 and 3, etc......
Star Control II: The Ur-Quan Masters (If you like space adventure and exploration games, YOU MUST PLAY THIS!) Tyrian 2000 (Quite possibly the best SHMUP ever? Maybe not, but you can't deny its greatness.) Scorched3D (You know Scorched Earth and those other artillery games where you calculate angles and velocity to try and hit your enemies, and if you miss, your shot eats away the terrain? Add another dimension, and you have Scorched3D.) Cortex Command (There are two brains for two teams, one red, one green. The objective is to blow apart the enemy brain while keeping yours intact, of course. What makes this game really interesting is that there's a lot of physics going on down at the pixel level, so you can blow up terrain or enemy actors and watch bits and pieces fly! There are also plenty of mods which spice up the game quite a bit.) Allegiance (Part space combat game, part RTS, all freeware, intense multiplayer action! But be prepared to learn several nuances of the game if you want to get good at it, like reducing your signature so that you don't give yourself and everyone near you away as easily.) Would have also mentioned Tribes and Cave Story, but someone else did already.
If you're a military tactical shooter person, definately America's Army. Gunz: The Duel is interesting and there are some great Tetris downloads out there.
If your America's Army issue is that you have Vista, you can only run version 2.6 (for whatever reason). The other client version installations don't work. I was trying to update to 2.8 all this week but it wouldn't work. Turns out that's a Windows Vista issue.
System Shock 2. An amazing game that's now considered Abandonware. Check it out :DLocke562
Would have mentioned it right away if it was clearly legal freeware, but abandonware is a bit of a gray area that GameSpot and many other forums don't quite tolerate...
On this very website you can get a full copy of SWINE, an FPS from those who made the Codename: Panzer series and Hidden and Dangerous -old and frustrating, but still $0 in cost
There is also a link to a free download of Ground Control, which every gamer should play.
