STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl
Titan Quest
Hellgate London
The Witcher
Space Siege
Jade Empire
I can keep going, I'm just not sure what exact genre to stick with. Any of those games seem appealing to you?
Stalker is not an RPG... Neverwinter Nights, Divine/Beyond Divinity, Dungeon Siege, Vampire: The Masquarade: Bloodlines, Morrowind (since you don't want Fallouit or Oblivion you probably don't want that either though), Guild Wars, Sacred 2 is coming soon...
Role Playing Game (RPG): a game in which participants adopt the roles of imaginary characters in an adventure

In STALKER, you assume the role as a character. Wait, role... role playing... role playing... game?
It has role playing elements? An inventory? A story line?
What makes this not an RPG?
"Role Playing Game (RPG): a game in which participants adopt the roles of imaginary characters in an adventure"
With that definition, practically any fps/tps/platformer/action game could be called a "role playing game". Stalker has quests that advance the story/game. And an inventory. There are no advancing levels, or skills.. How good you are in the game, is basically how good you are as a player.
Also, there aren't any moral choices in STALKER. biggest_loser
lol that diden't stop FF from being an RPG:)
But I would reccomand a game like the witcher ir Fallout 2!
For PC = The Witcher, Divine Divinity, Arx Fatalis, KOTOR, Beyond Divinity, Diablo 2, Mass Effect, Ultima Online, Fallout 1,2 and 3, Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2, Gothic series, Daggerfall, Morrowind and Baldurs Gate1 and 2
For 360
1. Lost Odyssey
2. Tales Of Vesperia
Other good rpgs for 360 are Too HUman, Eternal Sonata and INfinite Undiscovery. Also Blue Dragon!

By that definition, Crysis is an RPG.

probably only real RPG, or atleast something close to FRPs, Vampire The Masquerade series... so i can agree with this IF you can tolerate bugs and character movements... the first one was better in character models ( at least at its time )

haha you are totally right but thats why we call them "JRPG" nowadays, Role Playing Games without any Role Playing elements beside leveling... they are more for fun battle gameplays, stories and music, tbh i choose JRPGs over WRPGs but not because they are better RPGs but they are more fun and better in overall.
Wow, I'm seeing lots of good recommendations but the best RPG of all time isn't even listed and it even works on Vista.
Planescape: Torment
Some other great old RPGs are listed below.
Nox
Sacred w/ Underworld expansion
Arcanum
Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 w/ expansions
Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Dranor (not great but good).
Diablo 1 & 2 w/ expansions
Revnant (short but good)
Icewind Dale 1 & 2 w/ expansion for 1.
That's all of the one's I can recall right off hand but there are many others.
- Arcanum
- Planescape: Torment
- Baldur's Gate Trilogy
- Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines (underplayed and underappreciated)
- Nox

Well if we want to REALLY get down and nit pick about the definitions of an RPG, no computer game is an RPG because you are supposed to create your own Persona, and act and do what your persona you created would do, thus, "role-playing" that character in the game. That pretty much rules out most computer games, and leaves you with Pen & Paper as the only "true" RP games. I don't agree with that view, but just saying if we want to really get right down to it, none of these games are really "role-playing" depending on your definition of role-playing.
Anyway, I cast a vote for The Witcher. Although the combat seems to be rather shallow, but most RPG's seem to have a shallow combat system anyway. But it's about the only recent RPG that's held my interest. Oblivion and Neverwinter Nights 2 bored me to tears.zomglolcats
The combat is deeper than Diablo!!

Yes, the OC in NWN2 is full of Bioware-Clichés. But the expansion Mask of the Betrayer is one of the finest examples in storydriven RPGs lately. Beautiful design in that one. Many didn't like the Spirit Meter, but I think it was a great machanic to prevent the player from abusing the resting system. There's a great sense of balance between the spirit hunger, combat and the necessity to rest up.
