I'm getting a new PC in a couple of days, and I want to see what I've been missing - you see, I used to be a PC gamer, but I've been primarily gaming on consoles for the past 5 years or so, so I just wanted to know what are the top PC graphical powerhouses. (I already own Crysis 1 and Warhead, so that should be fun.)

Battlefield 3

Crysis 2

Crysis Warhead

Witcher 2

Metro 2033

Off the top of my head, it would be those. NOt counting subjective artstyle graphics like Rayman Origins.

To add to NaveedLife's list; Just Cause 2 Modded GTA IV (vanilla also looks good, need a monster PC for this sloppy port to run well, though.) Dirt 2 & 3 look pretty good, if you're into racing games.

all the above gets a +1

i also give honorable mentions to pt boats: pacific gambit. while not as visually superb as the others its game elements such as the water itself will pace things far beyond a next-gen consoles capabilities. ---- that game lags on last years better dx10 systems

There's also ARMA 2 and for other genres Anno 2070, Shogun 2 TW, M&MH VI and one that I recently found out thanks to somebody on this forum, Project Cars.

I actually think it's underrated. Nothing at all wrong with the game apart from some repetitive missions.

(The game is not story focused imo)

There is no making GTA IV run well. I've come to accept that. The game just wants an absurd amount of VRAM that simply does not exist on the market, it doesn't benefit very well from CFX/SLI which really makes things rough, and while it is supposedly CPU heavy I've only seen about a 5 FPS difference between my i7 930 at stock clocks and 4GHz. The game simply refuses to run well under any circumstances.

Rubbish. I could play it fine on my old computer which had a dual core and an 8800GT on medium settings. I'll throw something different into the mix: the clean sterile look of Portal 2 and its amazing animations on characters like Wheatley. Also don't forget the detail of Batman Arkham City.

GTA 4 with patches runs smooth as butter on a 5870. I dont know why people claim that today GTA4 still cant be run decently.

They're probably complaining because they can't fully max it and therefore it "needs a super computer to run smoothly!"

I could run it smoothly on a gtx285,of course all things maxed out except the view distance and detail distance...It run like butter with no problems...But i have to admit i have not seen a whole of a performance increase when i updated to my gtx570...

Problem with GTA4 is that it is more unstable than underpeforming, I get a few pauses and missing textures here and there but the game itself runs pretty smooth.

Shogun 2 is the best looking RTS by far. Wicked animations as well.

Just Cause 2 has great graphics.

Skyrim.

Modded or vanilla Crysis.

I can't even max it and do smoothly with my current setup which is in my sig, only default is smooth and even then it drops below 30FPS in certain areas.

The game is just poorly optimized.

The point is that GTA4 should not be performing like that with it's graphics and such, I should be getting better performance, hell, I get better performance with Just Cause 2 which looks better than vanilla and runs better.

  • Crysis
  • ArmA II

Can't think of a last one, sorry.

Overrated is a point of view, I say it is underrated. As far as graphics games like JC2 and Skyrim don't have the super quality graphics games like Metro and Crysis do, but when taken in as a whole rather than just walking up to a tree and staring at it I think they are awesome.

I find it funny that you act like it's unreasonable to expect to max out a 4 year old console port on a computer with year old top-end hardware that a lot of people would consider to be overkill. Considering my rig has no trouble getting 60 FPS in Metro 2033 and Crysis I think it's safe to call GTA IV unoptimized considering my average FPS in that game is like 30-45 FPS. Actually the FPS isn't so bad, what kills it is that the FPS sharply drops anytime I turn a corner which is due to the game's terrible memory management causing it to have to pause while it clears out VRAM and loads in a new block. How this game can manage to eat up 2GB of VRAM at 1080p with just one city block is mind boggling. It's like the devs went out of their way to code it as badly as they possibly could.

I agree with all of the games mentioned so far. Surprised no one has said Mirrors Edge, I think that game looks fantastic. Also gonna throw in Trine 2. I know you said top 5 but mentioned these anyway.

I agree with all of the games mentioned so far. Surprised no one has said Mirrors Edge, I think that game looks fantastic. Also gonna throw in Trine 2. I know you said top 5 but mentioned these anyway.

I would add Alan Wake. It looks truely amazing. It have one of the best graphics I've ever seen.

btw. There are lot of games which look great but doesnt have good technology or hi-res textures. Still Im more on great design, artistic levels than games with great engine. I would say unmodded Crysis is nice example. Without any mods sometimes it looks so bad that I dont understand so much hype. With mods it loooks much better. In my opinion Farcry 2 looks better than unmodded Crysis.

I agree about alan wake and also your cyrsis statement, over half PC gamers don't have a rigs to run crysis at max setting nor they have any knowledge to access to mods, so most of them blindly took photoshoped crysis internet bull shots as their best crysis graphic reference, while the game itself and cryengine2 offer nothing of the sort.

I clocked over hundred hours in crysis, warhead, more than 100 mods, and build stuffs around in cryengine2 and SDK, all the assets and tech powerness it has to offer are really nothing compare to alot current titles.

RAGE is extremely easy to run, the recommend graphics card is a 5550 for crying out loud.

besides the pictures posted by a previous poster prove that it isn't exactly the prettiest game ever.
