Topic speaks for itself. Time for a change and I'd like to know what people would recommend.

Running Win 7 64bit, so something compatible with that (can't imagine anything wouldn't be these days).

Avast is a pretty well done free AV. I've used it for a while now and everything seems to be holding up quite well, at least as far as I can tell!

I just use Microsoft Security Essentials it seems light weight, free, and already installed on windows 8. I have yet to get any kind of virus and who can argue with free. As for ones you pay for I hear good things about Avast

AVG. It doesn't get in the way of my computer like most. Computer and memory usage isn't a problem either, unlike McAffe and Norton.

while avast and avg have noticibly better detention on av-comparitives when they tested them, they're too anoyying. So I just use MSE.

I really question how accurate av-test.org is.  My work place uses Sophos and I find it sucks.  It gets a very high rating on the av-test.org website which doesn't make sense.  I've used a wide range of corp anti-virus editions from Mcafee, Sysmantec, Kaspersky, etc..  Even used GFI which incorporates multiple anti-virus software into one product.  All of them were better than Sophos.  Sophos is a pain to use and it's really bad when put on old systems.  Slows old computers to a crawl.  Yet it gets pretty high scores on that website for everything.

Where I work we have 1300 end users using Sophos so I have pretty good sample to go by.  The site needs to do some re-testing.

Microsoft Security Essentials you can't tell it's there until it needs you. Very happy with it for the 2 years i've been using it.

Seeing as how I haven't had a virus infection in 6-8 years, I'd much rather deal with the potential annoyance of MSE missing a virus than the constant annoyance of AVAST blocking programs that I want to run even though I've whitelisted them. I haven't tried AVG in a while. Might look into them again eventually.

Browser: SR Ware Iron Plugins: AdBlock Plus, ScriptSafe Anti-Virus: Avira I regularly challenge black hats to breach my security. Even if they could, they would need to pass through 256-bit AES encryption which would take months to brute force with a quad SLI system.

If you go by av-test.org, your best bet is Avast. AVG comes in second but it's bloated these days. But while MSE is lightweight and unobtrusive, it's been proven to miss threats that both Avast and AVG miss.

Meh... I have been using it since it launched in 2009 and I have never had a virus... And I use some pretty shady sites.

Not only that but it is so minimal.  On both Windows 7 and now on Windows 8, I have literally never seen it... Ever... Like right now I just had to go out of my way to even find it, and apparently it just scanned my computer while I played a game of league of legends and I didn't even notice it was happening...

Yeah I never had any viruses either, but I noticed MSE reporting errors in my event log. It couldn't do real-time malware updates and it kept on failing. Since then, I stopped using it. To be fair, I've seen Avast pick up malware when MSE didn't detect a thing.. which made me wonder if it was doing anything at all.

In this case, why anyone would use MSE over Avast is beyond me. Both are completely free, no strings attached, but Avast does a better job. Avast acts like it's barely there as well. I've used MSE until they failed the AV-test Certification and showing up errors.

Which programs does Avast block? I haven't had it block anything but then again, I don't go wondering around into malicious websites and junk/suspicious email. Are you referring to Avast from a few years ago? Avast has improved A LOT.

Only have used MSE & AVG.  My university offers a free version of Symantec AV, but I've never used it on any of my own systems (though I've installed it for others).

Yea, I was using it most of last year. I forget what it was specifically, butI believe it was an old game from GOG. I never figured out what was going wrong because I turned off active scanning and whitelisted the program but Avast continued to block it. That was the reason I gave when I uninstalled it. I had several games that I had to keep reporting as good to them. It seemed like they just go way overboard blocking any program they don't recognize. Good security I guess, but a big hassle too, at least for me. Before last year with Avast, I've used MSE ever since it was released and haven't had a virus. I'm a pretty careful user, not clicking on links from email or going somewhere I don't know is safe, and always running AD block and just whitelisting certain sites.

Same here. I used to be a AVG user but now I'm using Avast and it's less annoying :)
